Philadelphia Receives Rowan Grant

In 2012, Al Singmaster and Tom Reid

from the ASM Philadelphia Liberty Bell

Chapter began discussions with the Rowan

Family Foundation regarding a grant to

support the Chapter’s Materials Camp ac-

tivities. In December 2013, the Chapter

was notified that their request for a grant

was approved. The $75,000 grant will be

used to support the Students Materials

Camp and develop a Teachers Materials Camp. The Chapter

is extremely grateful to the Rowan Family for their support

of these camps.

Rhode Island Hosts Asphahani

The ASMRhode Island Chapter held its May dinner meet-

ing with ASM past president Aziz Asphahani, FASM, speak-

ing on “High-Performance Alloys Design and Development:

Then and Now.” He

is CEO of QuesTek

Innovations LLC and

chairman of Advanced

Motion Technologies.

Asphahani discussed

improved computa-

tional

tools

and

enhanced analytical

characterization, based

on integrated computa-

tional materials engi-

neering, which has proven highly effective in optimizing

materials performance. He also spoke with the Chapter’s

board about ways to enhance member participation and de-

scribed new directions of the ASM Foundation. He is an ac-

tive participant in the ASM Materials Camp initiative, a

program of great interest and participation of the Chapter.

Student Posters in Chicago

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) was the site of

the Chicago Chapter’s Student Poster night held in April.

There was a strong turnout with 17 posters on display sub-

mitted by undergraduate and graduate students from UIC,

Northwestern, IIT, and NIU. Shown are students on a tour of

the UIC lab. Far left is Didem Ozevin, assistant professor of

UIC’s Civil and Materials Engineering Department, who

gave a presentation on monitoring civil engineering struc-

tures to predict failure using acoustic emission. Far right is

David Rollings, Chapter chair.

What are the common career experiences of successful

materials engineers and scientists? How do they help shape

careers? What lessons are learned along the way? For more

established engineers, the answers may come easily. How-

ever, for early career professionals, the answers may not

seem so obvious.

At MS&T14 in Pittsburgh (October 12-16), materials pro-

fessionals with various backgrounds will share the narrative

of their careers so that early career professionals can make

informed decisions about their own paths. The ASM Emerg-

ing Professionals Committee is excited to announce the 7th

Annual Symposium

“Perspectives for Emerging Materials

Professionals: Career Opportunities and Experiences in

Materials Science and Engineering.”

The symposium is de-

signed for the emerging professionals’ community and is part

of Tuesday’s (October 14th) daylong programming for the

early career professional.

This year’s program includes invited presentations from

an outstanding group of speakers, ranging from those estab-

lished in their field to those in the early stages. The topics

include: seasoned career and early career perspectives and

advice from government labs, academia, and industry; en-

trepreneurship and small business; the importance of men-

toring and networking; international experiences; emerging

careers and professional development in the new economy.

We also are proud to announce that two keynote speakers

will share their career experiences and wisdom for emerging

professionals at this symposium:

Paul K. Mason,

president,

Thermo-Calc Software Inc., and ASM president-elect,

Sun-

niva Collins, FASM.

On behalf of the Emerging Professionals Programming

Subcommittee, we personally extend an invitation to attend

this symposium. It will provide an excellent opportunity to

interact with both emerged and emerging professionals alike.

We hope to see you there!

sional symposia, contact the symposium organizers: Mark
