achievement in materials or materials systems relating to the
application of knowledge of materials to an engineering struc-
ture or to the design and manufacture of a product.
Albert Sauveur Achievement Award
Prof. Yuntian T. Zhu, FASM
, distinguished pro-
fessor, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, will
receive this year’s award “for pioneering work on
the fundamental understanding of deformation
physics in nanocrystalline materials.” Established in
1934 in honor of a distinguished teacher, metallog-
rapher, and metallurgist, the award recognizes pio-
neering materials science and engineering
achievements that stimulated organized work along similar
lines to such an extent that a marked basic advance was made
in the knowledge of materials science and engineering.
William Hunt Eisenman Award
Dr. Robert E. Schafrik, FASM,
General Manager,
GE Aviation, retired, Cincinnati, will receive the
2014 Eisenman award “for outstanding contribu-
tions to the aerospace industry in the application of
materials science and engineering and the introduc-
tion of revolutionary materials through design, de-
velopment, production, and system application in
turbine engines.” The award was established in
1960, in memory of a founding member of ASM, and its first
and only secretary for 40 years. It recognizes unusual achieve-
ments in industry in the practical application of materials sci-
ence and engineering through production or engineering use.
J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award
Prof. Zi-Kui Liu, FASM,
professor of Materials
Science and Engineering, The Pennsylvania State
University, University Park, Pa., will receive this
year’s award “for his contributions in computa-
tional thermodynamics through integrated first-
principles calculations and the CALPHAD
method and for the advancement of phase equi-
libria theory, database development, materials de-
sign and promotion of thermodynamics.” The award was
established in 2007 to recognize outstanding contributions
to the field of phase equilibria. The award honors J. Willard
Gibbs, one of America’s greatest theoretical scientists. In ad-
dition to many other contributions, Gibbs laid the thermo-
dynamic foundations of phase equilibria theory with his
brilliant essay, “On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Sub-
stances,” published in 1876 and 1878 in the
Transactions of
the Connecticut Academy.
Allan Ray Putnam Service Award
Mr. David J. Fitzgerald, FASM,
presi-
dent, Precision Surfaces International Inc.,
Houston, will receive the 2014 Putnam
award “for quiet, consistent generosity,
serving the Houston Chapter for ASM,
ASM International, and the affiliated IMS,
in appointed and elected offices, providing
personal and financial support for educa-
tion at every level, and enriching materials science by his
work with industrial superfinishing.” Established in 1988, the
award recognizes the exemplary efforts of outstanding mem-
bers of ASM International on behalf of the Society to further
its objectives and goals. The purpose of this award is to rec-
ognize those individuals whose contributions have been es-
pecially noteworthy and to whom the Society owes a
particularly great debt of appreciation.
Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award
Prof. Gary M. Michal, FASM,
professor
and chairman, LTV Steel Professor of Mate-
rials Science and Engineering, CaseWestern
Reserve University, Cleveland, is recognized
“for dedicated and inspirational service as a
teacher andmentor, sharing wisdom, humor,
the love of finding things out, and the joy of
materials with students over the last four
decades.” Prof. Michael passed away after having been selected
as the 2014 recipient. The award was established in 1960 in
memory of an outstanding teacher and research engineer, who
was a founding member and president of ASM in 1921. It rec-
ognizes unusually long and devoted service in teaching, as well
as significant accomplishments in materials science and engi-
neering, and an unusual ability to inspire and impart enthusi-
asm to students.
Silver Medal Award
Established in 2010, the honor of Silver Medal of the Society
is to recognize members who are inmid-career positions (typ-
ically 5 to 15 years of experience), for distinguished contribu-
tions in the field of materials science and engineering, and to
the Society. The purpose of this award is to recognize leader-
ship at an early stage and encourage individuals to grow, nur-
ture, and further contribute to the growth of the profession, as
well as the Society. Winners of the 2014 award include:
Dr. James G. Hemrick,
research staff,
Materials Science &Technology Division,
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tenn., is
cited for “his world class reputation as an ex-
pert in refractory ceramics and insulation
materials and leadership in the refractory
community, as well as contributions to his
local chapter and leadership roles in other
materials related professional societies.”
Dr. John Nychka,
associate professor
and associate chair, University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Canada, is cited for “innovative
and substantial contributions to the peda-
gogy, style, and structure of education and
professional stewardship in materials sci-
ence and engineering.”
