Bradley Stoughton Award for Young Teachers
Dr. Amber Genau,
assistant professor,
Materials Science and Engineering, Univer-
sity of Alabama at Birmingham, will receive
this year’s award “for outstanding class-
room instruction, excellence in student re-
cruiting, and strong support of student
chapters of technical societies.” This award,
accompanied by $3000, was established in
1952 in memory of an outstanding teacher in metallurgy and
dean of engineering who was president of ASM in 1942. The
award recognizes young teachers of materials science, mate-
rials engineering, and design and processing, by rewarding
them for their ability to impart knowledge and enthusiasm to
students. The recipient must be 35 years of age or younger by
May 15 of the year in which the award is made.
Henry Marion Howe
Medal
F. Onimus, J.L. Bechade,
and D. Gilbon,
for their
paper entitled “Experimental
Analysis of Slip Systems Acti-
vation in Neutron-Irradiated
Zirconium Alloys and Com-
parison with Polycrystalline
Model Simulations,”
MetTrans
Vol. 44A,
2013. The award was established in 1923
in memory of a distinguished teacher, met-
allurgist, and consultant, to honor the au-
thor(s) whose paper has been selected as
the best of those published in a specific
volume of
Metallurgical and Materials
Transactions.
Marcus A. Grossmann Young Author Award
Prof. Joo Hyun Park,
is the 2014 award
recipient for his paper entitled “Structure-
Property Relationship of CaO-MgO-SiO:
Quantitative Analysis of Raman Spectra,”
MetTrans
Vol. 44B, 2013. The award was
established in 1960 in recognition of Dr.
Grossmann’s accomplishments, especially
his abiding interest in and encouragement
of younger metallurgists and materials engineers whose
paper has been selected as the best of those published in a
specific volume of
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions
for authors under 40 years of age on January 1 of the year in
which the paper was published.
ASM Student Paper Contest
Mr. Thomas Kozmel
is recognized for
his paper entitled “
Kinetics of Sub-Micron
Grain Size Refinement in 9310 Steel.”
The
ASM International Student Paper Contest
was established in 1985 as a mechanism
for student participation in Society affairs.
The award recognizes the best technical
paper (with a graduate or undergraduate
student as first author) that is published in an ASM-spon-
sored publication during the year.
Emerging Professional Achievement Award
Ms. Katherine Jonsson,
with IRISNDT, Edmon-
ton, Alberta, Canada, is the 2014 recipient of the
Emerging Professional Achievement Award. Estab-
lished in 2010, the award recognizes extraordinary
ASM volunteers with 0-5 years of post-graduation
experience who have made a significant impact on
ASM International through devoted service and
dedication to the future of the Society.
ASM Historical Landmark Designations
Aluminum Company of Canada
Ltd.,
Kingston, Ontario, has been
selected for a 2014 Historical Land-
mark Award. The citation reads, “At
this site, men and women shaped
aluminum from wartime need to
peaceful use, learning its secrets,
and developing new applications for the future.”
Oerlikon Metco,
Westbury, N.Y., also has been selected
as a 2014 Historical Landmark Award. The citation reads,
“The first family of exothermically reacting, self-bonding in-
termetallic forming compounds used by the thermal spray
industry for improved surface protection properties was de-
veloped at this site. Process and materials were commercial-
ized between 1965 and 1972.”
In 1969, the ASM Historical Landmarks Designation was
established to permanently identify the many sites and
events that have played a prominent part in the discovery,
development, and growth of metals and metalworking. In
1987, the scope of this award broadened to include all engi-
neered materials.

ASM Dome Design Competition
ASM International
Student Board Mem-
bers are pleased to an-
nounce a new design
competition open to
all Material Advantage
students at MS&T
2014. In an effort to
bring “our home at the
dome” to chapters and
students across the
country, student teams
will design and build
miniature
geodesic
domes. The competi-
tion will take place during MS&T and focus on the following
areas: mechanical strength, aesthetics, and a design presenta-
tion. Top prizes are $1000, $750, and $500.
