Honorary Membership

Dr. Chandra Shekhar Pande,

FASM,

metallurgist, Naval Research

Laboratory, Washington, will receive

this year’s award “for distinguished

service to the materials science and

engineering profession by his pio-

neering and seminal research and

teaching and its promotion to the

metallurgical community.” Honorary Membership in

the Society was established in 1919 to recognize dis-

tinguished service to the materials science and engi-

neering community, ASM strategic plan and initiatives,

and the progress of mankind.

Distinguished Life Membership

Mr. Henry M. Rowan,

Chairman,

Inductotherm Group, Rancocas, N.J.,

will receive this year’s award “for dis-

tinguished lifetime contributions to the

advancement of design and manufac-

ture of induction melting and heat

treating equipment worldwide, and to

enhancing educational opportunities

in engineering.” Distinguished Life Membership was es-

tablished in 1954 and is conferred on leaders who have

devoted their time, knowledge, and abilities to the ad-

vancement of the materials industries.

Gold Medal

Dr. Tresa M. Pollock, FASM,

professor,

Alcoa Chair, Materials Department, University

of California, Santa Barbara, will receive this

year’s Gold Medal award “for the enlightenment

of the microstructure/processing/property rela-

tionships of structural alloys and for imparting

that knowledge to her students and other tech-

nologists in industry, universities, and national

laboratories.” The medal was established in 1943 to rec-

ognize outstanding knowledge and great versatility in

the application of science to the field of materials sci-

ence and engineering, as well as exceptional ability in

the diagnosis and solution of diversified materials

problems.

Medal for the Advancement of Research

Dr. Aziz I. Asphahani, FASM,

president and

CEO, QuesTek Innovations LLC, Evanston, Ill.,

is the recipient of this year’s award. He is cited

“for the dedicated support and consistent spon-

sorship of research, not only for new materials,

but also for radically new applications of prod-

ucts in the process of commercialization.” The

award was established in 1943 to honor an exec-

utive in an organization that produces, fabricates, or

uses metals and other materials. The recipient, over a

period of years, will have consistently sponsored re-

search or development, and by foresight and actions,

will have helped substantially advance the arts and sci-

ences relating to materials science and engineering.

Engineering Materials Achievement Award

(EMAA)

Marie Cole,

distinguished engineer, Lead Free

Transformation, IBM, Hopewell Junction, N.Y.,

IBM Lead-Free Solder Server Team, will receive

this year’s award for “the development and imple-

mentation of lead-free solder assembly processes

for server and storage systems.” Established in
