This subcommittee strives to facilitate communication between the EPC and chapter leadership, as well as brainstorm methods of engaging young professionals at the chapter and national level. One of its main tasks is to reach out to chapters each year to help them foster new relationships with recently graduated Material Advantage students within each chapter’s regions. One of the M&CE’s new initiatives this year is to survey the chapter leadership to help us gain a better understanding of young professional engagement across the chapters. The feedback we receive will help us to shape our programming, enhance our outreach efforts, and allow us to serve the ASM community more effectively. So far, we are already seeing common themes in the survey results with regards to growing young professional engagement after graduation. We hope to focus the next stage of this effort on creating resources for chapters that will help guide them in best practices when it comes to communicating with and fully engaging students and young professionals. If your chapter missed the survey, but would still like to speak with us about questions or concerns for the M&CE subcommittee, we invite you to contact us at emergingprof@asminternational.org. After logging on to the ASM website, job seekers can upload a resume and do searches on hiring companies for free. Advanced searching allows filtering based on various aspects of materials science, e.g., R&D, failure analysis, lab environment, and manufacturing. Employers and suppliers can easily post jobs and set up pre-screen criteria to gain access to highly qualified, professional job seekers around the globe. For more information, visit careercenter.asminternational.org. CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS Williams Visits LA Chapters ASM President David B. Williams, FASM, made visits to three Los Angeles area Chapters (Los Angeles, Orange Coast, and San Fernando) on February 21-23. He spoke to the Los Angeles Chapter on “Materials and Manufacturing in Low Earth Orbit” and then presented on “How Universities and Industries Can Collaborate (Despite their Differences)” at the Orange Coast meeting. Williams also visited California State University, Northridge (CSUN) for a tour of the engineering research and instruction labs. He learned how the ASM Handbook series is being used in materials engineering courses held in the Pickett Materials Engineering Laboratory. McCabe David Williams, author of Transmission Electron Microscopy (center front), meets with Professor Kai He (holding textbook) and his students in a TEM class at the University of California, Irvine. During the CSUN tour (from le ): Hans Shin (chapter council), David Williams, Christoph Schaal (associate professor, mechanical engineering), John Pan (chair, manufacturing systems engineering andmanagement), and Dana Shatts (LA Chapter).
