FROM THE FOUNDATION Spring Training for Teachers Spring is always an exciting time at the ASM Foundation as we prepare for our ASM Materials Camps across the U.S. and Canada. This year is no exception. Master Teacher training was held March 10-12, where 30+ of our Master Teachers traveled to the Dome to discuss the Materials Camps for Teachers curriculum and prepare for the summer ahead. This is the only time when the Master Teachers gather to discuss the program and any changes to be made. Their dedication is evident by attending for the weekend and offering many important suggestions to improve the program and continue to engage more teachers. These seasoned professionals not only provide an understanding of materials science and engineering concepts and content, but they also have an understanding of curriculum and standards for a variety of high school and middle school classes. This knowledge helps the Master Teachers share with other educators how they can use the content in the classes they teach, such as chemistry, physics, and physical science. After seeing how engaging this content is, many teachers want to start offering a full materials science course, and the ASM Foundation staff and Master Teachers are happy to help make it happen. The Master Teachers will be deployed across the country to lead our summer programs, beginning in early June. Materials Camps for Teachers will be in new locations this year, in addition to those that have hosted the program for many years. We are grateful for the support that allows us to continue in those locations—and grow into new places to reach even more teachers and students. The 40 Materials Camps for Teachers are funded through the ASM Materials Education Foundation budget, which is separate from ASM International. The ASM Foundation engages ASM members, STEM funders, and other organizations to finance these programs. Without this support, the ASM Materials Camps could not take place as they do.
