HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | J U L Y / A U G U S T 2 0 2 0 6 8 Conn. will receive this year’s award for the “development and commercialization of the Cold Spray HeliumAutomated Recovery and Repair Production System (CS-HARRPS).” Established in 1969, this award recognizes an outstanding achievement in materials or materials systems relating to the application of knowledge of materials to an engineering structure or to the design and manufacture of a product. Albert Sauveur Achievement Award Prof. Sanjay Sampath, FASM, distinguished professor, Stony Brook University, N.Y., will receive this year’s award “for identifying impediments to knowledge in thermal spray tech- nology, which led to his developing improved tools for wide industrial adoption of in situ process diagnostics and coating property measurements.” Established in 1934 in honor of a distin- guished teacher, metallographer, and metallurgist, the award recognizes pioneering materials sci- ence and engineering achievements that have stimulated organized work along similar lines to such an extent that a marked basic advance was made in the knowledge of mate- rials science and engineering. William Hunt Eisenman Award Prof.WojciechZ. Misiolek, FASM, professor, Lehigh University, Bethle- hem, Pa., will receive this year’s award “for technology transfer of his engi- neering science knowledge to industri- ally relevant materials processing.” The awardwas established in 1960, inmem- ory of a founding member of ASM, and its first and only secretary for 40 years. It recognizes unusual achievements in industry in the practical application of materials science and engineering through production or engineering use. J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award Prof. Mark D. Asta, professor, University of California, Berkeley, will receive this year’s award “for first prin- ciples based atomic scale modeling and simulation of structural, thermo- dynamic, and kinetic properties of phases, surfaces, and interfaces.” The award honors J. Willard Gibbs, one of America’s greatest theoretical scien- tists. In addition to many other con- tributions, Gibbs laid the thermodynamic foundations of phase equilibria theory with his brilliant essay “On the Equi- librium of Heterogeneous Substances,” published in 1876 and 1878 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy. Allan Ray Putnam Service Award Mr. Dennis D. Huffman, FASM, The Timken Company (retired), Can- ton, Ohio, will receive this year’s award “for long-term commitment to ASM International at both the local and national levels and for similar efforts in a wide variety of community involve- ments.” Established in 1988, the award recognizes the exemplary efforts of var- ious outstandingmembers of ASM International on behalf of the Society to further its objectives and goals. The purpose of this award is to recognize those individuals whose contri- butions have been especially noteworthy and to whom the Society owes a particularly great debt of appreciation. Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award Prof. John H. Perepezko, FASM, professor, University of Wisconsin- Madison, will receive this year’s award “for distinguished academic devotion to lifelong learning and the contagious passion passed forward to his students for active service in the materials pro- fession.” The award was established in 1960 in memory of an outstanding teacher and research engineer, who was a founding member and president of ASM in 1921. It recognizes unusually long and devoted service in teaching, as well as significant accomplishments in materials science and engineering and an unusual ability to inspire and impart enthusiasm to students. Silver Medal Award Ms. Emily R. Kinser, laboratory manager, Corporate Research Materi- als Lab, 3M, St. Paul, Minn., will receive this year’s award “for impact achieved through her technical innovations and research strategy efforts related to microelectronics, biosensing technol- ogy, competitive analysis, IP portfolio contributions, and corporate research strategy throughout 20 years of ASM membership.” Dr. Veronique Anne Luc Vitry, associate professor, Metallurgy Lab, University of Mons, Belgium, will re- ceive the award “for sustained dedica- tion to make the field of electroplating and surface engineering more efficient and sustainable and for her contri- bution in the sharing of knowledge worldwide.” Sampath 2020 AWARD PROGRAM RECIPIENTS Misiolek Asta Huffman Perepezko Kinser Vitry
