The awards pro- gram recognizes achievements of members of the materials science and engineering community. Distinguished Life Membership Mr. George F. Vander Voort, FASM, consultant, Vander Voort Consulting LLC, Wadsworth, Ill., will receive this year’s award “for being the world’s leading authority and source for knowledge, in the field of metallog- raphy, specimen preparation, selective etching and tint etching, interpretation and measurement of microstructures, and fractography.” Distinguished Life Membership was established in 1954 and is conferred on those leaders who have devoted their time, knowledge, and abilities to the advancement of the materials industries. Medal for the Advancement of Research Mr. Geoff Hunt, senior vice presi- dent, engineering, Pratt &Whitney, East Hartford, Conn., will receive this year’s award “for continued financial support and executive leadership to advance the state of the art in aerospace tech- nologies, including advanced materi- als and manufacturing processes, to enable next generation aero-engines, avionics, and space systems.” The award was established in 1943 to honor an executive in an organization that produces, fabricates, or uses metals and other materials. The recipient, over a period of years, shall have consistently sponsored research or development, and by foresight and actions, will have helped substantially advance the arts and sciences related to materials science and engineering. Honorary Membership Dr. John Price Hirth, FASM, pro- fessor emeritus, The Ohio State Univer- sity, Columbus, will receive this year’s award “for contributions in laying the foundation for the theory of disloca- tions and the underlying mechanisms for plastic deformation and creep in crystalline materials.” Honorary Mem- bership in the Society was established in 1919 to recognize distinguished service to the materials science and engineering profession, ASM strategic plan and initiatives, and the progress of mankind. Gold Medal Prof. John Ågren, FASM, pro- fessor, KTH Royal Institute of Technol- ogy, Stockholm, will receive this year’s award “for outstanding contributions in the field of materials science and engineering and its scientifically based application to engineering problems, and for entrepreneurship toward mak- ing science useful for society.” The medal was established in 1943 to rec- ognize outstanding knowledge and great versatility in the application of science to the field of materials science and engineering, as well as exceptional ability in the diagnosis and solution of diversified materials problems.
