Williams, FASM, with an Honorary Fellowship. The award will be presented this August during the 16th European Microscopy Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark. Williams is the dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University and was the IMS Sorby lecturer in 2011. He also served as an ASM trustee, 2014- 2017. Williams holds B.A., M.A., Ph.D., and Sc.D. degrees from the University of Cambridge. He is co-author and edi- tor of 13 textbooks and conference proceedings and co-au- thor or author of over 450 publications on the application of electron microscopy to studies of metals and alloys. He is co-author of the leading textbook Transmission Electron Microscopy, which has sold over 20,000 copies and over one million chapter downloads. Now a visiting professor at the University of Manchester School of Materials, Williams is a Fellow of nine national and international professional soci- eties in the areas of electron microscopy, materials science, aviation, and aerospace engineering. Krajewski Elected to NAE Paul E. Krajewski, FASM, was elected to the 2020 Class of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). In February, NAE elected 87 new members and 18 international members. Krajewski is director, global research and development at General Motors Co. in Warren, Mich. He was cited “for development and implemen- tation of lightweight automotive mate- rials.” Krajewski received an M.S.E. and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a member of ASM and its affiliate society, SMST. He is also a member of the ASM Detroit Chapter. Election to NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practices, or education. An induction ceremony for the NAE Class of 2020 will be held on October 4 at the Academy’s annual meeting in Washington. Fryan Joins ASM Operations Team Ray Fryan joined the operations team of ASM International in March as executive director of new product development. He will also be a mem- ber of the cross-functional Chief Tech- nology Office team. Specifically, Fryan will focus on developing new products and services around ASM’s Materials Data Informatics business, and driving continued development and growth of existing digital products. Fryan resigned from his two- year role as ASM treasurer in order to accept the position. During his 37-year career with The Timken Company and TimkenSteel Corp., Fryan served in technology, manu- facturing, quality, and business development leadership roles, most recently as vice president of technology and quality. His ICME vision enabled the TimkenSteel Technol- ogy team’s creation of innovative new products—including highly fatigue-resistant clean steels, and an award-winning family of high strength/high toughness alloys. Fryan’s M.S. degree and Ph.D. are from Case Western Reserve University in MSE. He also is a graduate of the Executive Development for Global Excellence program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. German Receives Lifetime Achievement Award The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) announced that Randall (Rand) German, FASM, FAPMI, founder of German Materi- als Technology, has been selected to receive the Kempton H. Roll Pow- der Metallurgy Lifetime Achievement Award. Named in honor of Kempton H. Roll, the founding executive director of MPIF, the award was established in 2007 to recognize indi- viduals with outstanding accomplishments and achieve- ments, who have devoted their careers and a lifetime of involvement to the field of PM and related technologies. Reported to be only the fourth time the award has been given since its inception, it will be presented to German duringWorldPM2020: World Congress on Powder Metallurgy & Particulate Materials, in Montreal, at the opening general session on Sunday, June 28. He is currently a research pro- fessor at San Diego State University, previously serving as dean of engineering research. German is co-author of an upcoming book published by ASM International, Binder and Polymer Assisted Powder Processing, to be released this spring. Williams Krajewski Fryan German MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
