HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | A P R I L 2 0 2 0 7 8 IN MEMORIAM Herbert Ipser passed away on December 14, 2019, after battling a severe illness. Born on September 22, 1947, in Vienna, he studied chemistry at the University of Vienna. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1974, Ipser joined Y. Austin Chang as a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin-Milwau- kee working in the materials department. In 1976, he returned to the University of Vienna as an assistant professor and 10 years later presented his habilitation treatise and became a university docent. He was awarded full professorship for inorganic chemistry in 1998, a position he held until his retirement in 2015. Since 2005, he chaired the department of inorganic chemistry-ma- terials chemistry and was president of the Austrian Chemical Society, 2011-2016. His research included thermodynamics and extensive experimental and computational studies of alloy sys- tems. He received the prestigious Hume-Rothery Prize from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in the U.K. in 1997. Ipser was a member of ASM International’s Alloy Phase Diagram Committee and a long-time associate editor for the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion. Ipser Esteve Earns Promotion at ECM Vincent Esteve was promoted to business development manager of the ECM USA Inc. subsidiary in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., which manufactures inno- vative heat treating vacuum furnaces. Esteve will oversee business sales and marketing development in North, Cen- tral, and South America, expanding into new markets such as additive manu- facturing, vacuum induction melting, vapor phase aluminizing, and brazing. Esteve received his two master’s degrees in engineering and materials science from the French School of Mines of Ales and in international business, trade, and commerce from INSA Toulouse. He is a member of the ASM Milwaukee Chapter and ASM’s Heat Treating Society. Esaklul Joins NACE Standards Board Khlefa A. Esaklul was named to the NACE Standards Board in February. Esaklul is a materials and corrosion engineer, working with OxyChem in Houston. He has a Ph.D. in metallurgy from the University of Minnesota. The Standards Board is authorized to pro- vide oversight and management of NACE International’s standards and its chair holds a voting seat on the NACE International Board. Esaklul has served as Technical Coor- dination Committee chair of NACE’s Corrosion Technology Week. He is also a member of ASM’s Failure Analysis Society. Esteve Esaklul MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
