They also engage local college students at a similar event each fall at Gannon University. The technical speaker at the Behrend night was Xiawa Wu, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, who pre- sented “Computational Materials Sci- ence in Polymer Composite Research.” She shared results from a recent study of polymer matrix composites (PMCs) using multiscale modeling. Wu also discussed the use of computational materials in polymer studies, current chal- lenges in creating a multiscale modeling framework, and potential research projects. Bill Bennett (le ), Chapter chair, with Chetan Nikhare, Chapter treasurer and associate professor at Penn State Behrend, holding a gi to be presented to Xiawa Wu. Congratulations to this ASM Chapter celebrating 100 years of serving local members! Ontario Thank you for your commitment! We look forward to celebrating your future success! Calumet Hosts Fryan The ASM Calumet Chapter wel- comed Ray Fryan for an ASM trustee visit on February 13. Serving at that time as ASM treasurer, Fryan presented a talk on “How Materials Information & Design Integrates with Manufacturing.” He discussed how TimkenSteel Corp. created advanced materials models that can identify hidden design and cost constraints created by materials variation in cyclically loaded components. Significant value can be unlocked through increasing performance in exist- ing designs or decreasing component size in new designs. In addition, Fryan was treated to tours of the ArcelorMittal Global R&D facility as well as the Purdue University North- west campus. Wu Favorite motto or quote? “No probability, however seductive, can protect us from error. Even if all parts of a problem seem to fit together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, one has to remember that the probable need not necessarily be the truth, and the truth not always probable.” – Sigmund Freud Last book read?
