WilliamPark Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholar- ship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, character, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one academic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Cesar Guerrero Worcester Polytechnic Institute Guerrero joined Worcester Poly- technic Institute (WPI) to study mechanical engineering and imme- diately decided to get his master’s degree in materials science. He cur- rently works in the nanomaterials laboratory and advanced energy mate- rials laboratory creating high capacity batteries and solar cells for use in areas of Africa with no electricity. He is vice president of WPI’s Material Advantage Chapter and com- pleted an internship with Thermo Fisher Scientific creating innovative materials to help sick patients worldwide. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was estab- lished in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It serves as an expression of their commitment to educa- tion and the materials science and engineering community. Tuition of up to $10,000 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Casey Brown University of Wisconsin-Madison Brown is in her fifth year at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After a senior-year class on the deformation and structural properties of materi- als, she decided to continue on the structural materials path. She was a research intern for the U.S. Department of Energy studying the cooling effect of intermetallic compounds and had an eight-month co-op with the Sub Zero/Wolf Group Inc. help- ing to understand failure modes of various components. Brown is vice president of her Material Advantage Chapter. George A. Roberts Scholarships The George A. Roberts Scholarships were established in 1995 through a generous contribution from Dr. George A. Roberts, FASM, past president and retired CEO of Teledyne, to the ASM Foundation as an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate members of ASM at the junior or senior level who demonstrate exemplary academic and personal achievements, and interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Five scholars will receive a certificate and check for $6000 toward educational expenses for one academic year. Mackenzie Keefer Michigan Technological University Keefer is in her fifth year study- ing materials science and engineer- ing (MSE) at Michigan Technological University. Her interest in MSE was solidified after doing research in pow- der metallurgy. Her favorite pastime has been gaining industry experience through the Advanced Metalworks Enterprise and Materials United, as well as various internships and co-ops outside of
