She just completed her final internship in a materi- als and processes group working on space propulsion that will be utilized for manned missions. Maria Natalia Noriega Pedraza Drexel University Pedraza is a rising senior at Drexel University majoring in MSE. In addi- tion to her studies, she participates in organizations that grow her leadership skills. She is a member of the executive board of Drexel’s Engineers Without Borders, the Society of Hispanic Profes- sional Engineers, and she is a leader of Weekend Warriors. Through internships at GlaxoSmithKline, Fraunhofer Insti- tute, and the Drexel Nanomaterials Institute she learned to combine her passion and knowledge and hopes to continue solving challenging materials problems. Roman Palpanov University of Wisconsin-Madison Palpanov is entering his senior year pursuing a double major in MSE and statistics. He realizes the impor- tance of data analysis in engineering and is using his knowledge to bridge the gap between theory and practice. He spent last summer at Steel Dynam- ics in Indiana as a rail weld metallurgy intern, working with large amounts of data. He hopes to pursue a career in met- allurgy, but also strives to use data analysis to supplement his work in engineering. Stuart Shirley Colorado School of Mines Shirley is a senior in the metal- lurgical and materials engineering program at the Colorado School of Mines. As a student member of Material Advantage, he remains active by lead- ing the bladesmithing team participat- ing in the biannual TMS competition and he is serving as his school’s Material Advantage Chap- ter chair for the 2018-19 school year. In recent summers, he worked as ametallurgy intern with Nucor Corp. and Ellwood Group Inc. gaining experience in industrial manufacturing. Natalie Wieber University of Tennessee Knoxville Wieber is entering her third year of undergraduate studies in MSE at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK). She was first introduced to MSE during a high school engineering camp at UTK. She is the social chair for her Material Advantage Chapter, as well as the president of a service outreach student organization that teaches children about additive manufacturing. Currently, Wieber works at Oak Ridge National Laboratory doing characterization of binder jet printed metals. Acta Materialia Scholarships The Acta Materialia Scholarships were established in 2017 by Acta Materialia through its Board of Governors, as an expression of commitment to education and the mate- rials science and engineering community. Two scholars will each receive a certificate and check for $5000 toward educa- tional expenses for one academic year. Ashwin Kumar University of North Texas Kumar is enrolled as a Chancel- lor’s Scholar in the engineering pro- gram at Vanderbilt University. His engineering studies began at the Uni- versity of North Texas, where the TAMS program renewed his fascination for materials science. Working on optimi- zation of processing conditions in titanium alloys to achieve optimal biocompatibility earned him a Regeneron semi- finalist recognition and qualified him for the ISEF interna- tional science fair competition. He is vice president for the Material Advantage Chapter at the University of North Texas. Mark Petrovic Drexel University Petrovic is in his third year in Drexel University’s five-year B.S./M.S. program in MSE. He was introduced to the fieldof tissue engineering after join- ing the biomaterials laboratory group in his freshman year. After graduating from Drexel, he will continue research in regenerative medicine through an M.D./Ph.D. program. He hopes that further medical and materials training will give him a unique perspective on how to make strides in the development of engineered tissues and biomedical implants. David J. Chellman Scholarship The David J. Chellman Scholarship was established in 2014 by Mrs. Arline Denny in honor of her husband, a long-standing Senior Technical Fellow with Lockheed Mar- tin Corp. and ASM Life Member who enthusiastically served on the AeroMat Conference Organizing Committee for more than 25 years. The scholarship is an expression of his com- mitment to education and the materials science and engi- neering community, and is awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Tuition of $2500 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship.
