HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | SEPTEMBER 2026 59 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Whitney Luckett Colorado School of Mines Whitney Luckett is a senior studying material and metallurgical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. She serves as president of the school’s Material Advantage chapter, where she manages the executive board and oversees all club operations, and is an active member of the Society of Women Engineers. Luckett is also actively engaged in academic research with the Holtz Group, focusing on semiconductor thin films, and she shares her expertise as a teaching assistant for the Engineered Materials and Chemical Processing lab classes. Luckett is currently gaining industry experience through a research and development role at Steel Dynamics. Acta Materialia Scholarships The Acta Materialia Scholarships were established in 2017 by Acta Materialia through its Board of Governors as an expression of commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Two scholars will each receive a certificate and check for $5000 toward educational expenses for one academic year. Sofía González Espinosa Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia Sofía González Espinosa is a senior materials engineering student at Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, Mexico. She has been involved in research projects focused on heat treatment processes in steels, exploring the influence of processing conditions on microstructure and mechanical performance. Espinosa also serves as technical manager of her university’s Materials Advantage chapter, where she coordinates educational activities and initiatives aimed at strengthening the materials science community among students. She has completed internships at TenarisTamsa’s Research and Development Center, contributing to engineering projects and gaining experience in the application of materials science principles within an industrial environment. Amelia Morrison University of Pittsburgh Amelia Morrison is a senior majoring in materials science and engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Since her sophomore year, she has worked in the Chmielus Advanced Manufacturing and Magnetic Materials lab. Morrison has presented her research at the university’s Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression Fairs and the ASM Pittsburgh Chapter Young Members’ Night, where she placed third in the undergraduate poster contest. Her work has also been published in the University of Pittsburgh’s Ingenium: Journal of Undergraduate Research. Morrison most recently conducted research in the Black Hills Advanced Ceramics REU program at South Dakota Mines. David J. Chellman Scholarship The David J. Chellman Scholarship was established in 2014 by Mrs. Arline Denny in honor of her husband, a long-standing Senior Technical Fellow with Lockheed Martin Corp. and ASM Life Member who enthusiastically served on the AeroMat Conference Organizing Committee for more than 25 years. The scholarship is an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community and is awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Tuition of $2500 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Miguel Ángel Ojeda Medina Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia Miguel Ángel Ojeda Medina is a senior studying materials engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia. He served as the junior class representative on the executive board of his campus Material Advantage chapter and has won multiple scientific and technical project competitions at engineering fairs. Additionally, he and his team were top finalists in the 2026 SFSA Cast in Steel competition (horseman’s axe category), and his design secured the Best in Destruction award for his team in the ASM Geodesic Dome Design contest in 2024. Medina has completed two industrial sessions at Ternium, gaining experience in cold rolling and direct reduced iron processes. Outstanding Scholar Awards The Outstanding Scholar Awards were established to recognize students who have demonstrated exemplary academic and personal achievements as well as interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Three awards of $2000 each are funded by the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Austin Arvidson Colorado School of Mines Austin Arvidson is a sophomore at the Colorado School of Mines majoring in metallurgical and materials engineering and minoring in electrical engineering.
