HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | SEPTEMBER 2026 57 ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2026 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS William Park Woodside Founder’s Scholarship The William Park Woodside Founder’s Scholarship was established in 1996 by a gift from Mrs. Sue Woodside Shulec in honor of her grandfather. William Park Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholarship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, character, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one academic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Tyler Harper University of Minnesota Twin Cities Tyler Harper is a junior studying materials science and engineering and chemistry at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He currently serves as secretary of the school’s Material Advantage chapter, having previously served as assistant treasurer and as a member of the bladesmithing team, and he is on the Science and Engineering Student Board. Since the end of his freshman year, he has conducted research on the electronic and magnetic properties of metallic delafossites under Dr. Chris Leighton. Harper has interned at Sherwin-Williams, working on electrocoat technologies, and is a laboratory teaching assistant within the department of chemistry. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was established in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It ASM Nominating Committee Nominations Due December 15 ASM International is seeking members to serve on the 2027 ASM Nominating Committee. The committee will meet in person at ASM headquarters to select a nominee for 2027-2028 vice president who will serve as senior vice president in 2028-2029 and president in 2029-2030. The Nominating Committee will also select three trustee nominees for 2027-2030. Candidates for this committee can only be proposed by a Chapter through its executive committee, an ASM committee or council, or an affiliate society board. Nominations are due December 15. Nominations Sought for 2027 ASM/TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society Nominations are currently being accepted for the ASM/ TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society. The lecture was established in 1971 and is jointly sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and ASM International. The topic of the lecture shall fall within these objectives: • To clarify the role of materials science and engineering in technology and in society in its broadest sense. • To present an evaluation of progress made in developing new technology for the ever-changing needs of technology and society. • To define new frontiers for materials science and engineering. Qualifications of the lecturer include: • A person experienced in governmental policymaking, industrial policymaking, and/or public advocacy relating to the field of materials science and engineering. • An eminent individual who has an overview of technology and society in which technology and society are affected by development in materials science and engineering. • A person associated with government, industry, research, or education. Nominations may be proposed by any member of either Society. Submit your nominations by September 30 for consideration. Recommendations should be submitted to the headquarters of either Society.
