HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY 2026 55 CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS Students, teachers, and organizers of the 2026 IIT Kanpur Materials Camp. Kanpur Hosts Materials Camp The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India, was the site of an ASM Materials Camp held during May 7-10. More than 40 students and 10 teachers participated. ASM Immediate Past President Navin Manjooran, FASM, joined virtually to address the group. The curriculum included lecture presentations, hands-on experiments, and lab visits. Certificates were distributed to all attendees on the final day. Organizers included the ASM India Chapter, the Material Advantage of IIT Kanpur, as well as other societies and labs. Rocky Mountain Hosts Charles S. Barrett Silver Medal Award Lecture On March 5, the ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter hosted the Charles S. Barrett Silver Medal Award Lecture at the Colorado School of Mines. This lecture award, established in 1984, honors its namesake who was a pioneer in the study of the structure of metals and the application of x-ray diffraction techniques. It is presented to those individuals whose contributions to the science of metallurgy most exemplify the efforts and career achievements made by Dr. Barrett. This year, Prof. David Matlock, FASM, University Emeritus Professor at Mines, received the award and presented a lecture entitled, “Learning from the Past: Perspectives on Failure Analyses with an Emphasis on Fatigue.” Matlock, who started at Mines in 1972, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and co-founder of the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center at Mines. The event attracted 145 people including industry engineers, students, faculty, and several Mines alumni who came to hear another lecture from one of their favorite professors.
