iTSSe TSS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | A P R I L 2 0 2 3 3 5 iTSSe TSS SOCIETY NEWS After seven years of serving as Editor-in-Chief of the ASM Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST), Dr. Armelle Vardelle, FASM, TSS-HoF, has transferred her responsibilities to Dr. André McDonald, FASM, announced Prof. Bertrand Jodoin, FASM, chair of the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology Committee. McDonald has been Lead Editor of JTST since 2016, having served as a guest co-editor of the journal and as Lead Editor of the International Thermal Spray Conference Proceedings prior to that. He will be succeeded as Lead Editor by Dr. Giovanni Bolelli. Vardelle, emeritus distinguished professor at University of Limoges, became Editor-in-Chief of the journal in 2016, and led the journal through an exceptional period of growth in usage and recognized quality, during which submissions increased by more than 25%, the number of full-text downloads each year tripled, and the journal’s Impact Factor increased from 1.568 in 2015 to 2.839 in 2021. During her tenure, Vardelle continued to build on the strong foundation laid by her immediate predecessor Christian Moreau and JTST Founding Editor Chris Berndt. She grew the editorial team to include eight associate editors by identifying individuals who were both well-qualified to address new research developments and skilled in the breadth of topical areas covered by JTST, while continuing to increase the global outreach of the journal. She extended the scope of JTST to include surface laser technology and emerging issues, such as life cycle assessment studies. Jodoin said, “Alongside Armelle’s many technical contributions through her service as Editor-in-Chief are her significant contributions as a mentor and role model for many of the current well-established thermal spray researchers throughout the world. She did this despite being one of the very few women in the field and never allowed that to be an obstacle. She broke that ‘glass ceiling’ decades before people were starting to realize that females were under-represented in many fields. She led by action and example, and that leadership transcended all gender barriers.” André McDonald is Associate Vice President (Strategic Research Initiatives and Performance) and a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. He received his BSME in 2001 and his MSME in 2002 from the City College of New York. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 2007, under a collaborative research program with the National Research Council Canada in Boucherville, Québec. He is a past president of the ASM Thermal Spray Society Board and a member of the ASM Board of Trustees. Dr. McDonald has nearly 20 years of experience in the fabrication, development, and performance assessment of thermal- and cold-sprayed coatings. He currently leads the Experiential Learning in Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (ELITE) Program for Black Youth – an externally funded university- government-industry-community collaboration to support hands-on learning and work-integrated training of Black Youth in STEM fields and in entrepreneurship. As newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of JTST, Dr. McDonald joins Prof. Jodoin in announcing that Dr. Giovanni Bolelli has been named Lead Editor of the journal. Bolelli has been an Associate Editor of JTST since 2016, and prior to that served as a guest co-editor for the International Thermal Spray Conference special issues. Currently an Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy), Bolelli graduated in materials engineering in 2003 and received a Ph.D. in materials engineering in 2008 at the same university. Dr. Bolelli performs experimental research on the manufacturing and characterization of protective and functional coatings obtained by thermal spraying as well as by other surface engineering techniques. Vardelle McDonald Bolelli 3 SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THERMAL SPRAY HALL OF FAME The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray.
