HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | J U L Y / A U G U S T 2 0 2 0 7 0 ASM Historical Landmark Designation Iowa State University Ames Project Site, has been selected as a 2020 Historical Landmark, and the citation reads, “The world’s first producer of reactor-fissionable pure uranium metal, enabling self-sustaining nuclear-fission chain-reactions and all of the technologies that they make possible.” In 1969, the ASM Historical Landmarks Designa- tion was established to permanently identify the many sites and events that have played a prominent part in the discov- ery, development, and growth of metals and metalworking. In 1987, the scope of this award broadened to include all engineered materials. Emerging Professionals Achievement Award Ms. Ali Scheer, senior associate Eng-Met, Caterpillar Inc., Mossville, Ill., will receive this year’s award “for stepping up to fill multiple positions in the Peoria Chapter and demonstrat- ing leadership by coordinating multi- ple events including materials camp.” Established in 2010, the award recog- nizes and honors extraordinary ASM volunteers who are less senior individ- uals, i.e., 0-5 years of experience post-graduation, who have made a significant impact on ASM International through devoted service and dedication to the future of the Society. ASM Student Paper Contest Mr. Bernoulli Andilab is recog- nized for his paper entitled “Interac- tions Between Strontium and Sodium Fluorosilicate in the Combined Treat- ment of A319 Al Alloy.” The contest was established in 1985 as a mechanism for student participation in Society affairs. The award recognizes the best tech- nical paper with a graduate or under- graduate student as first author that is published in an ASM-sponsored publication during the year. Andilab Scheer Nominations Sought for 2020 ASM/TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society Nominations are currently being accepted for the ASM/ TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society. The lecture was established in 1971 and is jointly sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and ASM International. The topic of the lecture shall fall within these objectives: • To clarify the role of materials science and engineering in technology and in society in its broadest sense. • To present an evaluation of progress made in developing new technology for the ever changing needs of technology and society. • To define new frontiers for materials science and engineering. Qualifications of the lecturer include: • A person experienced in national or industrial policymaking in the field of materials science and engineering. • An eminent individual who has an overview of technology and society in which technology and society are a ected by development in materials science and engineering. • A person associated with government, industry, research, or education. Nominations may be proposed by any member of either Society. Submit your nominations by September 1 for consideration. Recommendations should be submitted to the headquarters of either Society.
