Brunello WOMEN IN ENGINEERING This profile series introduces lead- ing materials scientists from around the world who happen to be females. Here we speak with Rosanne Brunello, pres- ident and sales engineer at Mountain Rep in Cleveland. What does your typical workday look like? When you run your own business, a day is far from typical. My office never closes. I am on call 24/7. The reason is simple: Customers need help and need it now. When a customer needs a product because their fur- nace is down, I want to be their go-to gal. What part of your job do you like most? Solving problems for my customers is the most rewarding part of my business. What I enjoy doing the most is suggesting a manufacturing process or improvement on a design. What is your engineering background? Straight out of college, I was hired to promote the new technology of computerized numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, replacing NC machines. I became certified as a manufacturing engineer through the Society of Man- ufacturing Engineers years later. I spent the past 35 years as a manufacturer’s representative learning about all of the manufacturing processes available including machin- ing, castings, forgings, 3D printing, gears, and the plat- ing and processing of those components and assemblies. My expertise now relates to the thermal processing side of the business including furnaces, vacuum pumps, fluid cool- ing systems, thermocouples, and temperature uniformity surveys. Did you ever consider doing something else with your life besides engineering? I enjoy collaborating. I would be interested in promot- ing American manufacturing as an association leader, men- tor, or advisor to the U.S. president to impart how important manufacturing is in our country. If a young person approached you for career advice about pursuing engineering, what would you tell them? I frequently work with college students as a board member of Fenn Academy and the ASM Cleveland Chapter Student Coordinator for Cleveland State University. I love reaching out to students regarding engineering careers. I tell them that manufacturing is the heart of America. We need to have the most creative and innovative people in this industry to secure our competitive edge as a serious con- tender in a global market. Hobbies? Tennis, golf, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and collecting fine Brunello wines. Last book read? “A Heat Treater’s Book Guide” by Daniel H. Herring.
