edfas.org 33 ELECTRONIC DEVICE FAILURE ANALYSIS | VOLUME 28 NO. 4 model (LLM) development with ASM. Narang is actively influencing the model’s direction to ensure authoritative, citation-backed insights that support complex FA diagnosis, improve accuracy, and reduce knowledge fragmentation. This initiative aims to position EDFAS as the global steward of FA expertise and a leader in AI-enabled engineering workflows. He also focuses on enhancing member value by expanding mentorship opportunities, creating structured collaboration mechanisms, and strengthening linkages across equipment suppliers, semiconductor companies, academia, and research institutes. These efforts built upon his IRFA leadership experience will help EDFAS address emerging FA and technology challenges as an integrated community. Narang aims to grow the EDFAS membership base by inspiring younger engineers and students, leveraging targeted social-media engagement, and improving ISTFA demographics through stronger outreach and participation. He envisions EDFAS as a worldwide, single-stop resource for microelectronics FA through expanded digital content, e-learning, on-demand videos, and hybrid conference formats. Deepening collaboration with Asian and European FA communities is central to establishing truly international influence. Daminda Dahanayaka currently serves as the senior manager of Semiconductor FAB Operations at IBM Research within the Albany Nano-Technology Center, Dahanayaka is a passionate advocate for enhancing productivity and efficiency in semiconductor manufacturing while championing sustainable industry practices and embracing the principles of LEAN SIX Sigma. Before assuming his current role, Dahanayaka held several pivotal positions at GlobalFoundries in Essex Junction, Vermont, from 2017 to 2022. In these capacities, he expertly managed departments specializing in material failure analysis, chemical analysis, and device failure analysis. Prior to transitioning into management, Dahanayaka made significant contributions as a senior member of the Technical Staff and Team Leader for the Nano-Probe Electrical Characterization Group at GlobalFoundries. He also served as an Advisory Engineer/Scientist at IBM Microelectronics, where his insights and expertise left an indelible mark. Dahanayaka has been an active contributor to ISTFA for over a decade, where he has held various roles including abstract reviewer, session chair, and organizing committee member. He holds a Ph.D. in physics, a master’s degree in engineering physics from the University of Oklahoma, and a master’s in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. Dahanayaka’s foundational education includes a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Dahanayaka has authored or co-authored 12 journal publications and over 30 conference proceedings. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the development of scanning surface photo-voltage microscopy, a groundbreaking technique that measures mechanical stress in CMOS devices with sub-micron precision. Dahanayaka holds patents for this innovation in both the United States and Russia. Vision Statement As secretary of the Board, my vision is to help ensure that EDFAS operates with clarity, continuity, and strong communication, enabling the organization to effectively serve both current and future members of the failure analysis community. In close partnership with the Board, I aim to support EDFAS in the following ways: Preserve Institutional Knowledge and Continuity. Maintain clear, accurate, and accessible records of Board decisions, initiatives, and strategic discussions so that EDFAS leadership can build on prior work with consistency and transparency. Support Talent Development Initiatives. Document and help coordinate efforts that introduce and engage early-career engineers and scientists in semiconductor failure analysis, ensuring these initiatives remain visible, organized, and sustainable over time. Enable Innovation through Communication. Support the exchange of ideas by ensuring that technical discussions, workshops, and roadmap initiatives are clearly communicated, well-documented, and shared across the membership. Strengthen Collaboration and Mentorship. Facilitate coordination among EDFAS committees, industry partners, and academic collaborators, helping experienced members mentor emerging talent through structured and well-communicated programs. Assist FA Needs Assessment and Roadmap. Help organize and document FA roadmap activities, ensuring that the evolving needs of failure analysis engineers are clearly captured and communicated to equipment vendors and other stakeholders.
