HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | SEPTEMBER 2026 66 British Columbia Hosts Industry Exploration The ASM British Columbia (BC) Chapter launched its Industry Exploration program in 2024 as an innovative initiative designed to bridge academia, industry, and student communities through immersive, experience-based learning. The BC Chapter expanded this initiative during the current chapter year with a technical talk and facility tour at Rapidia Tech Inc., a leading Canadian innovator in metal additive manufacturing. It was organized by Dr. Sheng-Hui Wang (Chapter chair) and Garriott Yip (Chapter vice chair), and hosted by Dan Gelbart (founder and president of Rapidia). Approximately 40 members and students attended. This unique format represents a scalable and sustainable model for chapter programming that strengthens the ASM community. IN MEMORIAM Stephen Michael Copley, FASM, 90, of State College, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 14. Born in Champaign, Illinois, the family relocated to Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, when he was age three. In 1947, he moved to Berkeley, California, where he attended elementary and junior high before graduating from Berkeley High School as president of the Honor Society. In 1964, Copley earned his Ph.D. in engineering science from the University of California, Berkeley. His distinguished career was marked by six years in industry with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, followed by decades of teaching, research, and university administration at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago; and Penn State University, University Park. He was also president and CEO of an engineering consulting firm, Science, Technology and Engineering Inc., which expanded under his leadership into The Packer Group. He served as president and chair of ASM’s Board of Trustees (1990-1991), and chair and board member of the ASM Materials Education Foundation, focused on inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders. Per the family’s wishes, memorial contributions may be made to the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Raymond A. Fournelle, FASM, of Milwaukee, died on July 19 in a bicycle accident. He was 84. Fournelle served as a professor of mechanical engineering in the Opus College of Engineering at Marquette University for more than 50 years before retiring. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the Missouri School of Mines, now known as the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Before joining Marquette, he worked at Shell Oil Co. and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At Marquette, he served as interim chair of the mechanical engineering department and as associate chair and director of undergraduate studies for the department. An avid cyclist, Fournelle continued teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students at Marquette after retiring. His research and teaching focused on materials science, materials selection, failure analysis, and mechanical behavior of materials. A licensed professional engineer in Wisconsin, he held over 80 publications, was twice named a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow, and earned a Max Planck Research Award.
