Participants enjoyed a banquet following a round of golf at Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park, California. More than 90 golfers participated and enjoyed good fellowship while raising money for scholarships and awards. David, FASM, received a presidential plaque from the American Welding Society (AWS). David, a retired Corporate Fellow Emeritus at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), was presented the award earlier this year by AWS President Dr. Josh Burgess. David was cited for his “lifelong accomplishments in advancing welding science and technology.” He joined ORNL in 1977 and served as leader of the materials joining and nondestructive testing group in the laboratory’s Metals and Ceramics Division. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Indian Institute of Science in India and later earned a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, as a founding member and editor-in-chief of the journal Science and Technology of Welding and Joining, David contributed to more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and organized a variety of world-renowned conferences. CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS Houston Hosts Technical Seminar The ASM Houston Chapter annually partners with Rice University’s department of materials science and nano- engineering to host an annual technical seminar. The event convenes about 70 industry professionals, academics, and students from local Material Advantage chapters to learn from experts, with each year featuring a different topic. The 2026 seminar, “Industry Challenges and Lessons: Failures and How They Move Us Forward,” featured 10 speakers, representing applications such as oil and gas drilling, pressure vessels, and pipelines. The two keynote speakers included Prof. David Matlock, FASM, from the Colorado School of Mines, and Dr. Erik Mueller, FASM, from the NTSB and ASM Board of Trustees, who spoke about failure analysis and the commonality and reoccurrence of many failure modes over time. The event also included a strong networking component, which allowed participants to share how technical challenges and failures can be turned into lessons learned. District 2 Visits San Diego Maritime Museum Members of ASM’s Chapter District 2 held their annual meeting at the San Diego Maritime Museum on June 7. In attendance were representatives from three chapters: San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange Coast. The group was thrilled to be able to conduct their meeting on the upper deck of the historic 1898 steam ferry Berkeley. Attendees discussed ways to optimize key resources including ASM Connect, sustaining membership, ASM education courses, and local plant tours.
