ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | SEPTEMBER 2026 26 As president of ASM International, it is my privilege to share an up- date on the significant progress and accomplishments achieved across the four Society initiatives: Membership Value, Technical Content Roadmap, AI and Partnerships, and Education Partnership Expansion. Each initiative reflects our commitment to advancing the professional growth and engage- ment of our members while positioning ASM at the forefront of the materials science community. MEMBERSHIP VALUE One of ASM’s strategic priorities is ensuring that membership continues to deliver meaningful value at every stage of a member’s professional journey. Over the past several months, we completed the first phase of this initiative by conducting a comprehensive assessment of our membership programs, benefits, and services, benchmarking ASM against peer organi- zations. This work has allowed us to better understand our strengths, identify opportunities to enhance the member experience, and establish priorities for future growth. While this long-term initiative continues to evolve, we have already implemented several improvements that members can enjoy today, including redesigned membership webpages, a streamlined renewal STRATEGIC PLAN IN ACTION PROGRESS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ACROSS SOCIETY INITIATIVES Collaboration between members, volunteers, and staff led to significant progress on this year’s four Society initiatives in support of ASM International’s 2026-2030 strategic plan. Elizabeth Hoffman, FASM, ASM President experience, enhanced communications highlighting member benefits, and expanded awareness efforts through digital advertising and member spotlights. Looking ahead, our focus is on creating a more personalized and connected member experience. We want to make it easier for members to discover relevant resources, engage with technical communities and Affiliate Societies, connect with volunteer opportunities, and maximize the value of ASM membership. These efforts support our strategic goals of increasing member engagement, strengthening retention, and ensuring ASM remains the professional home for the global materials community. TECHNICAL CONTENT ROADMAP To enable data-decision approaches to new technical content initiatives, event programming, and educational opportunities, a comprehensive technical content usage assessment was completed, covering ASM Handbooks and Technical Books online usage, journal usage and citations, and search analytics. Preliminary results have been shared with our volunteer committees and councils, with content planning and infrastructure improvements based on data-driven decisions. An external landscape and emerging-technology trend review drawing on data from U.S. national labs, funding agencies, industry groups, international sources, and surveys of ASM subject-matter experts will further support a data- driven approach to decisions on future technical content. ASM has a strong reputation as a source for well-curated, expert-reviewed data, and the AI-assisted data approach is no exception. Looking forward, we will deepen our analysis by benchmarking content usage against industry data and building topic-by- topic views, while engaging ASM committees to shape future content-development priorities. This comprehensive approach ensures that ASM’s technical resources remain authoritative, relevant, and responsive to industry needs. AI AND PARTNERSHIPS ASM’s commitment to innovation is exemplified by the launch of Mat-E, your AI-powered materials science assistant.
