HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY 2026 57 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Ågren Receives Steel Lecture Award John Ågren, FASM, professor emeritus of materials science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, was awarded the Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture Award. Presented by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology, the award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding lifetime contributions to the fields of physical metallurgy and computational materials science. Ågren’s work spans several decades and has significantly advanced the understanding of steels, superalloys, and cemented carbides, as well as powder metallurgy and heat treatment. With over 200 scientific publications, his research in phase transformations, diffusion, and thermodynamics—particularly through modeling and simulation—has had a lasting impact on both academia and industry. Ågren’s belief in the importance of bridging science and application is exemplified by his long-standing involvement with Thermo-Calc Software, which provides thermodynamicsbased simulation tools used worldwide. McDowell Earns NAE Membership David L. McDowell, FASM, regents’ professor emeritus, Georgia Institute of Technology, Lilburn, was elected as a new member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in February. McDowell was selected “for microstructure-sensitive computational modeling of engineering alloys, and methodologies for computational materials design.” A story in the May issue of AM&P listed John J. Croat and Venkat Selvamanickam as ASM members in the 2026 NAE Class. McDowell’s name was regretfully omitted. Election to NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. An induction ceremony for the NAE Class of 2026 will be held this fall at the Academy’s annual meeting in Washington.
