HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY 2026 52 course was taught by a variety of chapter members including Dr. Anderson, Dr. Fournelle, Mr. Keckler, and Mr. Schultz. With the series now concluded, the Chapter is resuming its regular monthly meetings with a featured talk on “Failure Analysis and Generative AI” being presented by Rachel Dressler from Komatsu. Pittsburgh Hosts Young Members’ Night The biggest annual event of the ASM Pittsburgh Chapter is the Young Members’ Night (YMN), which was celebrated on February 19. Over 125 students, materials professionals, and academic members were in attendance. The evening included a student research poster session followed by student talks by undergraduate speaker Daniel Giganti Dima (University of Pittsburgh) and graduate speaker Ece Gunay (Carnegie Mellon University). The plenary speaker was Navin Manjooran, FASM, chairman of Solve and ASM’s immediate past president. He spoke on “Inventing the Future with Materials: The Backbone of Modern Technology and Innovation.” An awards presentation included announcements of poster winners as well as outstanding student recognitions. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Apelian and QuesTek Co-Organize ICME Forum Prof. Diran Apelian, FASM, and QuesTek Innovations held a workshop in January on integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), bringing together a group of 60 thought leaders from industry, national labs, and academia to reflect on ICME’s evolution, assess the current state of the art, and collaboratively shape its next decade of impact. The workshop was held at the University of California’s Irvine campus and sponsored by QuesTek and the Advanced Casting Research Center. The organizers look forward to seeing the advances that will define ICME’s next chapter. National Academy of Engineering Honors ASM Members In February, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) elected 130 new members and 28 international members. ASM was well represented among the inductees: John J. Croat, president, John Croat Consulting, Naples, Florida. For inventing neodymium-based rare-earth permanent magnets. Venkat Selvamanickam, professor, mechanical and aerospace engineering, University of Houston. For contributions to industrial-scale advanced manufacturing processes for high-temperature superconductor wires for electric power applications and their commercialization. Election to NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. An induction ceremony for the NAE Class of 2026 will be held this fall at the Academy’s annual meeting in Washington. Attendees and presenters of the ICME Impact Forum held January 28-29.
