HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY 2026 44 2026 LECTURERS ANNOUNCED 2026 ASM/TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials and Society Wednesday, October 7 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. At MS&T in Pittsburgh Dr. Mrityunjay Singh, FASM Chief Scientist, Ohio Aerospace Institute, Cleveland “Additive Manufacturing: Transforming Global Supply Chains and Advancing Sustainable Societal Development” Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology with the potential to reshape global supply chains, strengthen resilience, and support sustainable societal development. By enabling on-demand production, design freedom, material efficiency, and localized manufacturing, it offers new pathways to reduce waste, shorten logistics chains, and respond more rapidly to disruptions. This paradigm shift, in which designs can be transformed into products on demand, is enabling new business models while challenging traditional approaches to product development, manufacturing, and distribution. Beyond its technical promise, AM supports broader goals in energy conservation, circular economy practices, and inclusive innovation across sectors such as aerospace, transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure. This lecture will examine how AM technology is moving from a disruptive manufacturing method to a strategic enabler of sustainable and resilient systems. It will also highlight key challenges, including cost, reproducibility, scalability, materials qualification and standards, and responsible implementation. A range of materials, including polymers, ceramics, metals, hybrids, and multi-material systems, as well as structures fabricated using diverse AM approaches, will be discussed. The lecture will further emphasize how interdisciplinary research and development, policy support, and industrial adoption can expedite the transition to manufacturing models that are not only efficient and competitive, but also socially beneficial and environmentally responsible. 2026 Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lecture Tuesday, September 29 | 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. At IMAT in Quebec City Prof. Roderick Guthrie Director, McGill Metals Processing Centre, Dept. of Mining and Materials Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada “Fluid Flows in Liquid Metals— Friend or Foe?” The interactions of liquid metals and alloys with gas, solid, and liquid phases during their extraction and refining, prior to solidification, govern their final chemical and physical properties and their freedom from impurities. Computational fluid dynamics, in concert with experimentation and intuition, allows one to question and critique current liquid metal processing technologies, and to devise better ways to provide solidified materials fit for purpose. New ways to produce cleaner melts (steels and aluminum) with enhanced properties will be addressed in this presentation. 2026 IMS Henry Clifton Sorby Lecture Tuesday, September 29 | 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. At IMAT in Quebec City Dr. Geoff Scamans Chief Scientific Officer, Innoval Technology Ltd., Banbury, U.K. “Reflections on 50 years with Aluminum: Corrosion Control, Novel Applications and Challenges of Recycling Post-Consumer Scrap” Electron microscopy has been critical to developing an improved understanding of the corrosion and oxidation of aluminum alloys. This technology has supported their increasingly widespread use in multiple applications, especially in transport, construction, and packaging industries. In the 1970s, high-voltage electron microscopes, with their greater penetrating power and use of heating stages and environmental cells, enabled the role of hydrogen embrittlement to be understood in the stress corrosion cracking of weldable AlZnMg and AlMg alloys and aerospace grades of AlZnMgCu alloys. Advances in scanning electron microscopy in the 1980s led to observation 2026 LECTURERS Of cial ASM Annual Society Meeting Notice The Annual Society Meeting of members of ASM International will be held on: Monday, September 28 | 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Quebec City Convention Centre The purpose of the ASM Annual Society Meeting is the election of officers for the 2026-2027 term and transaction of other Society business.
