I am pleased to highlight the 2021 winners. The EDFAS Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes thosewho have given their time, knowl- edge, and abilities toward the advancement of the electronic device failure analysis industry. The 2021 awardee is William E. Vanderlinde, FASM, director, advanced computing systems, Laboratory for Physical Sciences. His citation reads: “for his contributions to the advancement of failure analysis for over 30 years, including research in electron microscopy and the conception and leadership of the Circuit Analysis Tools program at IARPA which led to significant advance- ments in semiconductor failure analysis.” WilliamVanderlinde received a Ph.D. inmaterials engineering fromCornell University in 1987 and joined the DODMicroelectronics Research Laboratory where he worked as a failure analysis engineer, laboratory manager, and technical director. He joined IARPA in 2009 as a program manager, creating and running the Circuit Analysis Tools (CAT) program. He later became the IARPA Office Director for Computing, IARPA Chief Scientist, and IARPA Acting Deputy Director. He then served as division director for advanced computing technology in the DOEOffice of Science, followed by director of defense microelectronics at the Pentagon. He is currently office director for advanced computing systems at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences. He was general chair of ISTFA 2010 and served on the EDFAS Board of Directors from2011 to 2018. He has published 40 peer-reviewed papers (including Best Paper at ISTFA 2003), was awarded two patents, and is a Fellow of ASM and a DNI S&T Fellow. The EDFAS President’s Award recognizes those who provided an exceptional amount of effort in their service to the Society. The 2021 awardee is Bryan Tracy, senior staff engineer, Tesla. He is cited “for an exceptional level of technical leadership, professional mentoring, and enthusiasmas technical session chair, user groupmoderator, and paper reviewer, which elevated the technical content and quality of ISTFA.” Bryan Tracy began his education in themetallurgical andwelding engineering department at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, then got a master’s fromUC Berkeley in materials science. Berkeley introduced himto electronmicroscopy, which became a lifelong passion. At RPI, Bryan used TEM in his thesis entitled “Direct Electron Microscopy Studies of the Bone-Hydroxyapatite Interface.” Moving to the world of silicon semiconductors at Intel and AMD/Spansion, he became a Spansion Fellow and was the leader of the materials characterization department. Bryan joined EAG Labs as a senior director of the Advanced Imaging Group and is currently now at Tesla. Bryan has been a longtime member of ISTFA and enjoys sample preparation and electron microscopy to solve materials science problems. Please joinme in thankingWilliamE. Vanderlinde, FASMand Bryan Tracy for their significant contributions to inventing improved industry techniques and providing key research and education to benefit the FA community. To continue the recognition of worthy contributors, I urge you to send suggestions for next year’s award to me at knauss_lee@bah.com .
