ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MARCH 2026 42 SMJ HIGHLIGHTS / SMST NEWS covering removed group that possessed significantly lower Ebvalues compared to the as-manufactured electro-polished stent rings. These findings highlight the importance of test article selection for pitting corrosion assessments of Nitinol medical products covered with a non-conductive polymer (Fig. 2). SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR SMST STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS The International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) is seeking applicants for its student board member position. Students must be a registered undergraduate or graduate during the 2026-2027 academic year and must be studying or involved in research in an area closely related to shape memory alloys. For information on eligibility and benefits, visit smst.asminter- national.org, click on Membership & Networking, SMST Board Nominations. Applications are due by April 1. SMST WILLIAM J. BUEHLER AWARD The SMST William J. Buehler Award recognizes excellence in shape memory or superelastic alloy technical innovation. This award recognizes those who have provided an exceptional amount of effort and valuable return on effort in their service to advancing shape memory and superelastic alloy technology. Nominations are reviewed and pre-discussed by the SMST Awards & Nominations Committee. The recipient is then selected by a committee including the SMST president and vice president, as well as the chair of the A&N Committee. The award will be presented at SMST 2026 in La Jolla, Calif. SMST NOMINATIONS By Othmane Benafan, Chair, SMST Awards and Nomination Committee and Past President othmane.benafan@nasa.gov DONATE NOW TO CASMART’S STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE The Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies Society (SMST) is teaming with CASMART, the Consortium for the Advancement of Shape Memory Alloy Research and Technology, at SMST 2026 Conference & Exposition in La Jolla, California, for their 7th Student Design Challenge. The Student Design Challenge is intended for undergraduate and graduate students to consider innovative approaches to developing new materials and hardware using shape memory alloy (SMA) technology. Students will have the opportunity to showcase and present their creativity during the CASMART Student Design Challenge. SMST believes in inspiring young minds to pursue science, math, and technology education and careers. These subjects are critical in our economy, so let’s work together to raise money to excite students and drive them to fulfilling and productive career paths!
