HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JANUARY 2026 46 IN MEMORIAM John E. Gruzleski, FASM, of Guelph, Canada, passed away on November 1, 2025, at the age of 83. He was emeritus professor of engineering at McGill University and previously served as chair of metallurgical engineering and dean of engineering at the university. Gruzleski also was the founding director of the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph. He received numerous awards including the Synergy Award from Timminco Ltd. for outstanding achievements in innovation, Alcan and Dofasco Awards for pioneering work on strontium modification of aluminum casting alloys, Engineering Alumni Award for outstanding teaching at McGill University, and was named a Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Fellow for his contributions to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Frank “Galen” Hodge, FASM, Kokomo, Indiana, died on October 17, 2025. He was born on May 27, 1938, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He attended The University of Kansas and obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in metallurgical engineering. He then went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he earned a Ph.D. in materials engineering. He joined the Stellite Division of Union Carbide in 1969, later known as Haynes International. Hodge held various positions with the company including a two-year stint as European technical and marketing manager, allowing him to live in France. He retired in 2001 as vice president–corporate technical support. While employed at Haynes, he served as representative of the company to a chemical engineering consortium called Materials Technology Institute (MTI). He then served as MTI president for three years and sat on the board of directors for many years. When he retired from Haynes, he took a position with MTI as an associate director where he managed research projects until he retired in 2010. Hodge was named a Fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, ASM International, and MTI. Word has been received at ASM Headquarters of the death of Harry W. Wolverton of Jackson, Pennsylvania. He passed away on August 28, 2025, at the age of 99. Wolverton graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in metallurgical engineering in 1948 and served in both the U.S. Army and Navy. Gruzleski Hodge IN MEMORIAM
