HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 57 Alpha Sigma Mu Lecture, Panel and 2025 Class of Fellows Alpha Sigma Mu (ΑΣΜ) is the international honor society for materials science and engineering. It is incorporated in the State of Ohio as a charitable 501(c)(3) organization and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. The Society was founded in 1932 and has had a close association with ASM International since 1957. Regular membership in ΑΣΜ is granted to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students exhibiting integrity, leadership, and initiative. At this year’s annual meeting at ASM’s IMAT 2025 event, Dr. William E. Frazier, FASM (Pilgrim Consulting LLC), presented an outstanding Alpha Sigma Mu Lecture entitled, “A Transformative Epoch in Materials Science & Engineering and Manufacturing.” Emily Kinser, FASM (ARPA-E), and Satish Dixit introduced Dr. Frazier prior to his virtual presentation, and led the Q&A portion. Prior to the lecture, Kinser moderated a panel discussion on “Revolutionary Changes in Materials Manufacturing.” The session was jointly organized by ΑΣΜ and ASM’s Advanced Materials Manufacturing Committee. Panelists included Aisha Haynes (Strategic Marketing Innovations), Slade Gardner (Big Metal Additive), Christopher Misorski, FASM (Mercury Marine), and Neil Goldfine (Jentek Sensors Inc.). Alpha Sigma Mu Fellowship honors distinguished professionals in industry, government, education, and management, and/or those who have provided outstanding service to ΑΣΜ. Alpha Sigma Mu Fellows for 2025 were recognized during the event, including: Peter Collins, Emily Kinser, FASM, Christopher Misorski, FASM, Aisha Haynes, and Navin Manjooran, FASM. Current officers of ΑΣΜ include President William E. Frazier, FASM (Pilgrim Consulting), Vice President Fred Schmidt, FASM (Advanced Applied Services), Treasurer and Secretary Walter W. Milligan, FASM (Michigan Technological University), and Immediate Past President Joseph W. Newkirk, FASM (Missouri University of Science and Technology). FROM THE FOUNDATION Be the Spark That Ignites the Future As the new Chair of the ASM Materials Education Foundation, I am deeply inspired by the extraordinary reach and impact this organization continues to achieve. Each year, our Foundation empowers hundreds of teachers with the tools and confidence to bring materials science and engineering into their classrooms. These educators, in turn, ignite curiosity in their students, the future scientists, engineers, and innovators who will shape the world ahead. This year, our network has grown stronger than ever. With 47 ASM Materials Camps across the nation and a community of more than 15,000 trained teachers, our ripple effect extends into classrooms from coast to coast. Each teacher reaches an average of 123 students every year, meaning that nearly 103,000 young minds will discover the excitement of materials science and the many career pathways it opens, just from the teachers we have trained this year. These numbers are impressive, but what truly matters is the ripple effect behind them. Every time a teacher leaves a camp with renewed excitement, that energy flows directly into their classroom. Each time a student conducts a simple experiment, a seed of possibility is planted. Every time a donor invests in our mission, a door opens for a young person who might one day help design more sustainable materials, create cleaner energy solutions, or engineer medical breakthroughs. Your support makes these stories possible. Whether you contribute through funding, volunteering, or advocacy, your partnership fuels the growth of our programs and helps us reach even more educators and students. Together, we are building a stronger, more diverse, and more inspired STEM pipeline for the future. As we look ahead, I invite you to continue investing in the power of teachers, the spark that lights the way for generations to come.
