FEATURE ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 37 HEAT TREATING SOCIETY NEWS MACKENZIE RECEIVES 2025 GEORGE H. BODEEN HEAT TREATING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Donald Scott MacKenzie, FASM, global metallurgist, Quaker Houghton, Collegeville, Penn., is the recipient of the 2025 George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award. Established by the ASM Heat Treating Society in 1996, the award recognizes distinguished and significant contributions to the field of heat treating through leader- ship, management, or engineering development of substantial commercial impact. MacKenzie is recognized “in recognition of his unparalleled contributions to advancing quenching technology worldwide through pioneering work in quenchant materials and modeling, and for his tireless dedication to education and training within the heat treat industry.” STUDENT WINNERS AT HEAT TREAT 2025 IN DETROIT The Fluxtrol Student Research Competition award and recognition program for young innovative scientists/ professionals seeks to encourage participation in ASM HTS, and to provide attractive offers and opportunities in the worldwide thermal processing community. Sponsored by Fluxtrol, this is a two-phased award encompassing a poster competition, as well as an oral presentation for semi-finalists. First Place: Natalie Compton, Colorado School of Mines, “Effects of Inclusion Properties on Fatigue Behavior of High Strength Bar Steel.” Second Place: Sarah Tokos, Colorado School of Mines, “Induction Tempering Process Development for 8 mm Thick Plate Steel.” Third Place: Nicole Hudak, The Ohio State University, “Development of a Novel Metastable Beta Alloy with Hot Isostatic Pressing.” Congratulations are also due to Team CHTE from Worcester Polytechnic Institute for winning the 2025 ASM Heat Treating Society Strong Bar Competition. Teams of university students flexed their metallurgical muscles during this competition, which challenged them to heat treat steel bars to achieve the highest combination of bending strength and bend deflection. Thanks to Inductotherm Group and Nucor for sponsoring the competition. Scott MacKenzie receives the 2025 George H. Bodeen award from Lesley Frame at Heat Treat 2025. Fluxtrol Student Research Competition first-place winner Natalie Compton with Rob Goldstein, FASM, Fluxtrol. Sergio Gallegos, Quaker Houghton, presents the ASM HTS Strong Bar award to Noah Kantor. 2025 ASM HTS/BODYCOTE BEST PAPER IN HEAT TREATING AWARD The winner of the 2025 ASM HTS/Bodycote Best Paper in Heat Treating Award is entitled, “Computational Design of Interlayers for Thermally Stable Compositionally Graded Coatings on Nickel Alloys” by Mikayla Obrist, post-baccalaureate student at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The ASM Heat Treating Society established the Best Paper in Heat Treating Award in 1997 to recognize a paper that represents advancement in heat treating technology, promotes heat treating in a substantial way, or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating. The award includes a plaque and $2500 cash prize endowed by Bodycote Thermal Process-North America. 3
