ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 29 A panel session on “Opportunities and Barriers for AI in Industry— from Office Work to Manufacturing” was held at ASM International’s annual meeting and conference on October 21 in Detroit. Moderated by Larissa Vilela Costa and Trisha Rouse, the event offered an opportunity for attendees to hear firsthand examples of the potential and pitfalls of arti- ficial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) from experts in the materials-related workplace. The session was jointly sponsored by three co-located events: ASM International’s Heat Treat 2025 and the International Materials, Applications, and Technologies (IMAT) 2025, as well as the American Gear Manufacturers Association’s Motion + Power Technology Expo. Panelists provided their perspectives on how AI is impacting daily operations for office workers as well as materials processes ranging from hardness testing to new alloy development. The panelists’ opening remarks were followed by a lively question and answer period. Here are some highlights from the discussion.
