HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2025 64 IN MEMORIAM William “Bill” Dennis Brewer, 85, of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away on August 11. Born on June 15, 1940, in Clemmons, North Carolina, he graduated from Southwest High School in 1958 and then from Wake Forest College in 1962 with a degree in physics. He was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. Brewer earned a master’s degree from George Washington University while employed at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He retired in 2001 after 40 years as a materials research scientist at NASA. During his career he served as a leader in ASM International and received multiple awards for his contributions to the space program, culminating with the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2000. Wei Tong Shieh, 91, of Lathrop, California, died on June 18. An accomplished metallurgical engineer, Shieh was born in Keelung, Taiwan. He attended college at National Taiwan University, the first in his family to go to a university and graduate. His drive for learning continued as he left Taiwan to attend the University of Toronto. He excelled in his studies and was accepted by the University of Illinois to pursue his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering. After receiving his doctorate, Shieh began working for Timken Research in Ohio. He later took a job in upstate New York with General Electric. Later, he worked for General Dynamics in Massachusetts until he retired and moved to California. He was chair of several ASM International conferences. Shieh published numerous research papers and articles in several technical publications related to welding, applied physics, fracture engineering, and corrosion.
