HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2025 57 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Business Turnaround Achieved: ASM’s Journey from De cit to Strength As September unfolded, ASM International entered a new phase— one of renewal and confidence. The past year has been marked by decisive actions that moved us away from uncertainty and into a period of growth, alignment, and stability. Today, the results of those efforts are visible in the energy of our members, the pride of our staff, and the strength of our financial foundation. The July board and leadership meetings were a clear example of this progress. Conversations were candid and productive, and the outcomes set concrete priorities for the year ahead. Just as important, our July all-staff meeting confirmed that morale has shifted significantly. Employees expressed pride in what has been achieved, confidence in ASM’s direction, and optimism about the opportunities that lie ahead. One of the most significant achievements of this period is the Business Turnaround. Not long ago, ASM faced annual deficits of nearly $10 million. Through careful restructuring, tighter fiscal management, and engagement at every level of the organization, ASM has moved decisively from negative to positive operating results. This is not just about numbers—it is about securing the resources needed to invest in members, expand our reach, and strengthen our influence worldwide. Our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan is also nearing completion. Importantly, it is not sitting on a shelf awaiting approval—it is already shaping actions. Focus areas are being embedded into current operations, ensuring immediate impact while also aligning with long-term goals. This integration demonstrates that strategy at ASM is not theoretical—it is active, practical, and measurable. Preparations for IMAT 2025 in Detroit are gaining momentum. A centerpiece of the conference will be the first Executive Leadership Forum, which I am organizing, that will bring together leaders from government, academia, and industry to explore how materials science can address pressing global challenges. This initiative highlights ASM’s role as a convener of ideas, bridging sectors to advance innovation. The President’s Task Forces are also making steady progress. Their efforts in expanding global engagement, strengthening chapters, and enhancing recognition programs are already visible in the daily work of the Society. These contributions are reinforcing ASM’s place as the world’s largest and most connected community of materials professionals. Digital Tools and Services continue to be an area of visible progress for ASM. Participation in ASM Connect is steadily increasing, enabling members to exchange knowledge and collaborate more effectively across borders. Our online learning programs are also expanding, providing accessible technical content and professional development opportunities to members at every stage of their careers. In addition, a new Association Membership Management System is in development to replace the outdated IT platform that has long created difficulties for members—including around joining and renewals. This upgraded system is being designed with ease of use at its core, ensuring that engagement with ASM is seamless, intuitive, and aligned with the needs of a global membership community. A full rollout is planned for March 2026. As we enter the final quarter of 2025, ASM International is not slowing down. The Business Turnaround achieved over the past year has significantly strengthened the Society and positioned it for continued success. With this renewed foundation, I am preparing to transfer leadership to Elizabeth Hoffman, FASM, who will take the helm on October 22 at the ASM Board meeting and guide ASM into its next chapter of growth and impact. We are now positioned not only to serve our members more effectively but also to expand our leadership in materials science and engineering on the global stage. If you have not yet reviewed the new ASM Fact Sheet, I encourage you to do so. It offers a clear picture of our scope and impact, while underscoring the unique value ASM delivers to its members. It is a reminder of why ASM continues to be the professional home for materials scientists and engineers worldwide. ASM International – The World’s Largest Materials Society.
