William Park Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholarship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, character, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one academic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Laney Zuelsdorff University of Wisconsin-Madison Laney Zuelsdorff is a senior majoring in materials science and engineering with a certificate in nuclear engineering materials at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She currently serves as co-president of the AFS portion of the university’s Material Advantage chapter, where she leads industry outreach and student engagement efforts. Zuelsdorff has competed in the SFSA Cast in Steel Competition and sits on the advisory council for STAR Scholars, which recognizes undergraduate engineers for excellence in academics and leadership. Since her sophomore year she has conducted research in the Nuclear and Applied Materials Research Group, focusing on cold spray coatings for nuclear reactors. Zuelsdorff is currently working as a process engineer at Signicast and plans to find a job in the metals or manufacturing industry. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was established in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It serves as an expression of their commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Tuition of up to $10,000 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Gregory Kenning University of Pittsburgh Gregory Kenning is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh studying materials science and engineering. A member of the university’s Material Advantage group, he started his research journey two years ago, working for three REU programs at: Cornell, working on fluid dynamics of particle accelerator cavities; University of California, Merced, working on using ensemble density functional theory to look at semicon- ductor bandgaps; and Texas A&M, working on a long- and short-term memory AI model for analyzing stress strain loops in materials. Kenning plans to earn a doctorate degree in either materials science or physics, with plans to pursue a career in research and possibly teaching in the future. George A. Roberts Scholarships The George A. Roberts Scholarships were established in 1995 through a generous contribution from Dr. George A. Roberts, FASM, past president and retired CEO of Teledyne, to the ASM Foundation as an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate members of ASM at the junior or senior level who demonstrate exemplary academic and personal achievements, and interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Five scholars will receive a certificate and check for $6000 toward educational expenses for one academic year.
