HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2025 63 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Manjooran Recognized by Virginia Tech Navin Manjooran, FASM, was inducted into the prestigious Virginia Tech Hall of Fame - Academy of Engineering Excellence in May. Since the university’s founding in 1872, only 190 individuals have received this honor from among the more than 82,000 living engineering alumni. Manjooran is the current president of ASM International and chairman of Solve, a global technology and research services company addressing energy, industry, medical, and infrastructure challenges. He is Fellow of seven professional societies, including ASM International, the American Ceramic Society, the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining, the Indian Institute of Metals, Alpha Sigma Mu, and the Indian Institute of Engineers. He has served on a multitude of boards, published 12 books, and secured 12 patents. Manjooran has served on the Virginia Tech University Board of Visitors and the school’s Capital Campaign. National Academy of Sciences Honors Ritchie Robert O. Ritchie, FASM, is a newly elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Ritchie is among the 120 new members and 30 international members named by NAS this past April. Ritchie is the H.T. & Jessie Chua Distinguished Professor of Engineering, department of materials science and engineering, University of California, Berkeley. He has received numerous ASM awards including the Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lecturer (2010) and Marcus A. Grossman Young Author Award (1979). He is a member of the ASM Santa Clara Valley Chapter. The NAS was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and—with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine—provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations. Gornicki Retires from ECM William (Bill) Gornicki, retired from ECM USA in June following a 35-year distinguished serve in the heat treating industry. He joined ECM USA in 2020 with leadership experience in vacuum furnace technology. His prior roles at Diablo Furnaces, ALD Vacuum Technologies, and Ipsen, underscore a career marked by innovation and commitment to excellence. Gornicki has been a dedicated contributor to the broader heat treat community. He actively served on boards and committees for ASM International, the American Gear Manufacturers Association, and the Center for Heat Treating Excellence at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Gornicki IN MEMORIAM Irving William Glater, 95 years old, died August 26, 2022, at his home in Exeter, Massachusetts. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on March 25, 1927. He joined the U.S. Army in July 1944 and served in both WWII and the Korean conflict. He later served a year on an Army base in Germany before settling into a home in West Hartford for 50 years. Through the GI Bill, Glater earned his metallurgical engineering degree from Colorado School of Mines. He worked as a senior metallurgist and senior materials engineer for United Aircraft, Hamilton Standard, Sikorsky Aircraft, Turbo Power & Marine Systems, and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Group for over 25 years before becoming a private metallurgical consultant. Glater was a certified and registered professional engineer with a master’s degree in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was published multiple times including during his retirement years. Glater was part of a veteran homecoming in 2014 in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Honor Flight.
