HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2025 58 When we empower student leaders today, we are cultivating the leaders of tomorrow. Their voices help us grow, not just as an organization but as a community that values mentorship, collaboration, and lifelong engagement. Their contribution is not just important; it is essential. Join us in Detroit in October for IMAT 2025, Heat Treat 2025, and the International Conference on Residual Stresses. Enjoy the many networking opportunities, reconnect with your peers, and attend the Annual Awards Dinner as well as the 112th Annual Meeting of the Society. I encourage you to review the IMAT Program Highlights in this issue as you make plans to travel to the co-located events. We look forward to connecting with you in Detroit. Veronica Becker Executive Director, ASM International veronica.becker@asminternational.org FROM THE FOUNDATION FROM THE FOUNDATION Beyond the Classroom: Celebrating Our Materials Camps for Students At ASM Materials Education Foundation, we often shine the spotlight on our award-winning Materials Camps for Teachers—and for good reason. These camps empower educators to bring real-world, hands-on STEM learning into their classrooms. But equally inspiring are our Materials Camps for Students. These student camps are a unique opportunity for high schoolers to explore the world of materials science and engineering in a way that few ever get to experience before college. What makes these camps truly special is the dedication of our volunteers. Each summer, engineers, scientists, and industry professionals from across the country generously give their time to mentor students. They share not only their technical expertise but also their personal stories and career paths— making science feel personal, possible, and exciting. This year, Lehigh University celebrates its 20th year of hosting our Materials Camp for Students—a milestone that reflects the enduring power of partnership and community investment. In addition to our U.S.-based programs, our international outreach continues to grow as well. This year, we have two student camps in France and one in Germany, expanding our global impact and bringing the excitement of materials science and engineering to even more students around the world. At the heart of it all is our flagship Eisenman Materials Camp, held each summer at ASM Headquarters under the iconic geodesic Dome. This prestigious, application-based program brings together bright, curious students from across the country for an immersive week of learning. Students are grouped with teams of mentors to tackle real-world materials challenges, conduct lab work, and dive deep into metallurgy, failure analysis, and materials testing. This year’s Eisenman Camp will welcome 35 students and 17 dedicated mentors, all ready to engage, explore, and inspire. At the end of the week, students will present their findings to an audience that includes our board members, donors, and invited guests. It’s always a powerful moment—seeing how much these students have learned, how confidently they speak about complex topics, and how much excitement they carry into their futures. Through the support of our volunteers, hosts, and donors, our ASM Materials Camps for Students are opening doors, building futures, and igniting a passion for materials science that will last a lifetime. Carrie Wilson Executive Director, ASM Materials Education Foundation Wilson International Metallographic Contest at IMAT Deadline September 26 The International Metallographic Contest (IMC), an annual contest cosponsored by the International Metallographic Society (IMS) and ASM International to advance the science of microstructural analysis, will be held at IMAT 2025 in Detroit, October 20-23. Five different classes of competition cover all fields of optical and electron microscopy: Class 1: Light Microscopy—All Materials Class 2: Electron Microscopy—All Materials Class 3: Student Entries—All Materials (Undergraduate Students Only) Class 4: Artistic Microscopy (Color)—All Materials Class 5: Artistic Microscopy (Black & White)— All Materials Best-In-Show receives the most prestigious award available in the field of metallography, the Jacquet-Lucas Award, which includes a cash prize of $3000.
