HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2025 52 materials.” Established in 1934 in honor of a distinguished teacher, metallographer, and metallurgist, the award recognizes pioneering materials science and engineering achievements that have stimulated organized work along similar lines to such an extent that a marked basic advance was made in the knowledge of materials science and engineering. William Hunt Eisenman Award Dr. Victor Champagne, Jr., FASM, high-rate additive manufacturing leader, U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Dudley, Mass., will receive this year’s award “for providing a fundamental understanding of the cold spray bonding mechanism and relationship to the critical impact velocity leading to a new class of commercialized cold spray powders.” The award was established in 1960, in memory of a founding member of ASM, and its first and only secretary for 40 years. It recognizes unusual achievements in industry in the practical application of materials science and engineering through production or engineering use. J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award Prof. David E. Laughlin, FASM, emeritus ALCOA professor of Physical Metallurgy, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, will receive this year’s award “for sustained teaching and research on the application of thermo- dynamics to the MSE, including a textbook and application of the Third Law to the proper display of phase diagrams.” The award honors J. Willard Gibbs, one of America’s greatest theoretical scientists. In addition to many other contributions, Gibbs laid the thermodynamic foundations of phase equilibria theory with his brilliant essay “On the Equilibrium of Hetero- geneous Substances,” published in 1876 and 1878 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy. Allan Ray Putnam Service Award Mrs. Frauke Hogue, FASM, metallographer, Hogue Metallography, Pacific Palisades, Calif., will receive this year’s award “for countless contributions to materials science education, from multiple classes in metallography to organization of the ASM Materials Camps for students and teachers.” 2025 AWARD PROGRAM HONOREES Dr. Mark F. Smith, FASM, senior manager, (retired), Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M., will receive this year’s award “for sustained and exceptional volunteer service and leadership that impacts chapters, affiliate societies, leadership mentoring, fiscal planning, and journal creation, all of which are hallmarks of a modest and selfless volunteer.” Established in 1988, the Allan Ray Putnam Service Award recognizes the exemplary efforts of various out- standing members of ASM International on behalf of the Society to further its objectives and goals. The award’s purpose is to recognize those individuals whose contributions have been especially noteworthy and to whom the Society owes a particularly great debt of appreciation. Silver Medal Award Mr. Ryan Haase, principal materials engineer, Materials Evaluation and Engineering Inc., Plymouth, Minn., will receive this year’s award “for enduring contributions to ASM International, the advancement of the science of failure analysis, and the application of materials engineering technology to the broader engineering community and society at large.” Prof. Aaron Paul Stebner, professor, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, will receive this year’s award “for outstanding leadership in education, research, and economic development at the intersection of materials, mechanics, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.” Established in 2010, the honor of Silver Medal of the Society recognizes members who are in mid-career positions (typically 10 to 20 years of experience), for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and the Society. The purpose of this award is to recognize leadership at an early stage and encourage individuals to grow, nurture, and further contribute to the growth of the profession, as well as the Society.
