ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY/AUGUST 2025 38 iTSSe TSS iTSSe TSS Dome was advantageous in working with the professionals at ASM directly. His citation reads: “For focus and dedication to progressing thermal spray and cold spray commercial applications. TSS Past President and retired President of Hannecard Roller Coatings Inc. (formerly ASB Industries Inc.), recognized a worldwide network that can work together to combine leadership in research, technology, materials, and industry to promote innovation for functional applications.” TSS PRESIDENT’S AWARD Dr. Filofteia-Laura Toma was selected for the 2025 TSS President’s Award for Meritorious Service. This award recognizes exceptional service to the Thermal Spray Society and the thermal spray community. Examples for such service activities are committee service, service on the Board of Directors, organization of conferences or symposia, development of certifications or standards, education, and outreach to students and the general public. While any member of the Thermal Spray Society is expected to further the Society’s goals through service, this award recognizes those who provided an exceptional amount of effort in their service to the Society. Dr. Filofteia-Laura Toma received her master’s degree in physics and chemistry of materials from the University of Pitesti, Romania, in 2001, and obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Technology Belfort-Montbéliard, France, in 2004. In 2006, she was awarded a distinguished fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (IWS) in Dresden, Germany. From 2014 to 2017, she was the Manager of the Thermal Spray Group at Fraunhofer IWS and is currently senior engineer scientist in the Department of Heat Treatment and Thermal Coating. In 2016, she was awarded the Talent Excellence Fellowship from Fraunhofer Society. Toma regularly lectures on Surface Technology at Technische Universität Dresden, Institute of Materials Science. With more than 20 years of R&D experience in thermal spray, she collaborates closely with academia and industry partners, supporting the development of advanced, multifunctional, and environmentally friendly coating solutions and products, as well as facilitating technology transfer to address industrial and environmental challenges. Toma has contributed to JTST and ASM TSS events for over 10 years, taking on an increasingly role as co-editor and guest editor of the Proceedings of the ITSC Conferences and to the special issues of the JTST. She is also a member of the TSS Program Committee and has served as session chairs. Toma is currently a member of TSS Board of Directors and JTST Editorial Committee. She is one of the co-founders of the TSS WiTS – Women in Thermal Spray initiative. Additionally, she sits on national and international advisory and scientific committees. Recognized as an international thermal spray expert, she is invited to give lectures worldwide. Toma JOURNAL OF THERMAL SPRAY TECHNOLOGY VOLUME 33 BEST PAPER AWARDS The Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) is pleased to announce the winners of the JTST Volume 33 Best Paper Awards, as chosen by an international committee of expert judges. The awards were acknowledged during this year’s International Thermal Spray Conference and Exposition (ITSC), held May 5-8, 2025, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The JTST Committee believes it is important to evaluate the quality of engineering and scientific contributions published in JTST and to provide recognition of excellent work and its publication. Each paper is reviewed and evaluated on its merits for scientific and engineering content, originality, and presentation style. The JTST Editorial Board and the ASM Thermal Spray Society Executive Board of Directors extend their congratulations to the winning authors. The awards were presented by Dr. André McDonald, FASM, JTST Editor-in-Chief. SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THERMAL SPRAY HALL OF FAME The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray. For a copy of the rules, nomination form, and list of previous recipients, visit tss.asminternational.org or contact maryanne.jerson@asminternational.org. Nominations are due September 30 of this year for recognition in March 2026. SOCIETY NEWS 4
