HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY/JUNE 2025 53 Susarla Honored by Microscopy Society of America Sandhya Susarla was named the Albert Crewe Award winner by the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) in March. She is among just nine people named by MSA as one of its 2025 Society Awards recipients. Susarla is an assistant professor in the department of materials science and engineering at Arizona State University. Her research interests lie in directly imaging the structural-property e ects in quantum materials. She has published peer-reviewed articles in multiple journals and her past work has been recognized with postdoctoral awards from MSA and the American Physical Society. Susarla is a member of the ASM Phoenix Chapter. She will be honored at a ceremony on July 28 as part of MSA’s Microscopy & Microanalysis 2025 meeting held in Salt Lake City. Susarla Silvana Carrizo Honored by Luján de Cuyo Patricia Silvana Carrizo was the guest of honor at a ceremony at Luján de Cuyo City Council in Argentina. She received a recognition of merit for her work as a researcher and distinguished resident of the department of chemical engineering at the National Technological University, Mendoza province. She was also recognized for her role as editor of the Springer book Reverse Engineering of Ancient Metals. During the event, Carrizo gave a presentation about her archaeometallurgy work. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS IN MEMORIAM John “Jack” J. Eckenrod, FASM, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, passed away on February 6 at the age of 87. He was a 1955 graduate of Latrobe High School and received his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in metallurgical engineering. Eckenrod’s distinguished career included tenures at Crucible Materials Corp. and Colt Industries Operating Corp., which allowed him to develop products that have impacted the engineering materials sector. His work focused on addressing the challenges of corrosion and strength in stainless steel. As a result, he was awarded 10 patents during his career. His contributions continue to influence industries reliant on heavy-duty materials. Eckenrod retired from Crucible as a research engineer. He joined the ASM Pittsburgh Chapter in 1960 and remained an active member for 65 years. He received the Pittsburgh Chapter’s E.C. Bain Award in 2009 and the Chapter Chair’s Award in 1991, 1999, and 2004. For many years, he was the Chapter’s Yearbook Chair, served as the official photographer, and organized the Chapter’s annual holiday parties at the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. Carl H. Lund of Arlington Heights, Illinois, passed away on March 16, 2024, at the age of 95. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Lund earned a metallurgical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He spent most of his career in the aerospace industry working for the Martin Marietta Corporation, where he developed several groundbreaking patents for alloys used in jet aircraft engines. Lund was a member of the ASM Chicago Regional Chapter. Lund Eckenrod Patricia Silvana Carrizo displays her certificate of honor while Rolando Baldasso, member of the Honorable Deliberative Council of Luján de Cuyo and a renowned civil engineer, holds her book.
