EMERGING PROFESSIONALS Data and Digital Content If there’s one thing my experience in materials engineering has taught me, it’s that having strong technical expertise is only a foot in the door. As the materials field and the industries around it become increasingly interconnected, the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively are becoming clear career accelerators. Professionals who can precisely convey their ideas are better equipped to navigate complex challenges and drive innovation, especially when working in interdisciplinary teams. Of all the components that shape an emerging professional, communication and connection are two traits that consistently set individuals apart, especially early in their careers. At the end of the day, it’s not just what you know, but how you communicate, and who you’re connected to. Strong communication skills go beyond giving a polished presentation. They’re about translating complex concepts in a way that’s accessible, tailoring your message to different audiences, and creating valuable connections. From a career standpoint, these skills can open doors. They give you an edge in job interviews and make you a more adaptable candidate for a range of roles. One of the most effective ways to sharpen your communication skills is through networking. Attending conferences, joining committees, and getting involved with your local ASM Chapter are excellent ways to expand your network and build interdisciplinary expertise. Putting yourself out there can broaden your perspective and lead to unexpected career or research opportunities. In addition, staying informed on materials news, like following ASM on LinkedIn, is another great way to stay connected with the community. However, it is vital to remember that networking is not about collecting contacts but building authentic relationships. The people you meet—peers, professors, colleagues, or even LinkedIn connections—aren’t just acquaintances. They are potential mentors, collaborators, and connectors to opportunities you may not even know exist. As your career progresses, your technical skills will evolve, but your ability to communicate effectively and build strong professional relationships will remain a constant differentiator. If you are looking to grow your network or polish your communication skills, ASM has many great opportunities for emerging professionals to get involved. Check them out below!
