The ASM Materials Education Foundation (ASM MEF) empowers educators and inspires students through dynamic materials science and engineering programs. Operating with its own mission, vision, budget, and board of directors, ASM MEF independently raises 100% of its funding to ensure our program is free for teachers and students to participate. Through hands-on curriculum and innovative teaching tools, the Foundation equips educators to transform classrooms, ignite student curiosity, and prepare the next generation of STEM professionals to tackle 21st-century challenges. ASM Materials Camp® Teachers The ASM Materials Camp for Teachers trains and equips K-12 educators to bring materials science and engineering concepts to life with engaging, inquiry-based lesson plans that can be implemented in their classrooms in a variety of courses (chemistry, physics, physical science, CTE classes, etc.). Participants learn low-cost, simple experiments that are easily integrated into existing curriculum or programs. All curriculum aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards to help teachers see how they can meet their teaching requirements with this content. Attendees receive four Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and can opt for two graduate level credits. Participants take home a workbook and lab supplies to use in their work, along with a new network of fellow teachers, local industry professionals, and master teachers across the country. Maximum Impact, Minimum Costs Each Materials Camp trains 27–30 teachers, who in turn, reach more than 3500 students annually. Given that the average teacher’s career spans 14 years, just one camp can ultimately influence over 45,000 students. The ripple e ect of these camps ensures that materials science education continues to expand, making a lasting di erence in STEM engagement. To further support educators in delivering handson STEM learning, the ASM Materials Education Foundation has awarded $188,500 in teacher grants. These funds provide resources and tools that help bring materials science concepts to life, enriching students’ learning experiences. A Lasting Impact on STEM Education Since its inception, ASM Materials Camp for Teachers has revolutionized STEM education by equipping 14,421 educators with the knowledge and tools to bring materials science into their classrooms. This impact extends far beyond the camps—these teachers have introduced over 1.1 million students to materials science and engineering concepts, fueling the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. By investing in teachers and students, the Foundation is not only strengthening the talent pipeline but ensuring that materials science and engineering remains a vital and accessible field for years to come.
