STRATEGIC PLAN ASM INTERNATIONAL ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | APRIL 2025 60 The ASM 2020-2025 Strategic Plan was built around four key pillars that served as the foundation for the organization’s growth and development. These pillars included Digital Transformation, which focused on modernizing and expanding ASM’s digital resources; Interdisciplinary Growth aimed at fostering collaborations across various scientific and engineering disciplines to address emerging challenges; Globalization, which sought to expand ASM’s reach and impact on a global scale; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which emphasized creating a more inclusive and equitable environment within the materials science community. These strategic pillars have guided ASM’s initiatives and continue to shape its direction moving forward (Fig. 1). These pillars have provided a robust foundation that will steer development of the 2026-2030 strategy. A team led by ASM Senior Vice President Elizabeth Hoffman, FASM, is working on refining the details of the 2026-2030 plan, engaging with various stakeholders, including committees, councils, and affiliate societies to ensure the plan reflects the evolving needs of the ASM community. Feedback is being gathered through interviews with stakeholders and a member survey. A detailed discussion of the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan is scheduled for the 2025 ASM Spring Meeting, with plans to finalize it at the ASM Strategy Meeting this July. ASM STRATEGIC VISION: PROGRESS AND FUTURE DIRECTION FOR THE WORLD’S LARGEST MATERIALS PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY ASM International is focused on fostering strategic collaborations, driving member engagement, and strengthening core foundations, while also defining its strategic plan through 2030. Navin Manjooran, FASM, ASM President ABOUT ASM INTERNATIONAL VISION: To be the leading global resource for materials information. MISSION: To gather, process, and disseminate materials information globally through education, networking, and professional development for members, organizations served by our members, and the materials community at large. In July 2024, the ASM Board of Trustees and ASM staff gathered and reviewed the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan. Leveraging the five strategic topics (Table 1), the Marketplace approach was used to identify what was needed for the 2026-2030 strategy along with goals for 2024-2025. The 2020-2025 Strategic Plan laid the foundation, and the Pathways to Success for this period formed the starting point. The key themes explored in the Marketplace identified areas where ASM needs to focus its efforts moving forward. 2024-2025 GOALS The 2024-2025 goals have focused on several core areas, each aimed at furthering ASM’s impact and strengthening its organizational foundation: (1) Fostering Strategic Collaborations, (2) Driving Member Engagement, and (3) Strengthening Core Foundations. Fostering Strategic Collaborations has been a significant area of focus, with efforts to bring together materials scientists and leaders from across industries and geographies. The goal is to deepen ties with leading companies to drive technological breakthroughs, strengthen collaborations with academic institutions, and enhance partnerships with national laboratories. The collaborations strengthened with the IIM, IOM3, JIM, and others highlight these efforts, bringing together experts from diverse fields and showFig. 1 — ASM 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.
