HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | APRIL 2025 59 and support to ensure classroom implementation. Through the Teacher Institute, more students will discover and see themselves in career opportunities in science and engineering. Just last month, ASM MEF hosted our master teacher training at the Dome. This is the one time each year that we gather the master teachers to discuss the Materials Camp curriculum and plan for the amazing summer ahead when they will be deployed to 44 camps across the U.S. and Canada. These dedicated educators play a crucial role in bringing hands-on materials science experiences to teachers and students nationwide. With new locations, expanded resources, and an ever-growing network of passionate STEM advocates, we are making a lasting impact. It is widely known that the demand for skilled professionals in materials science and STEM is growing more urgent every day. But together, we can take action. This spring, we are introducing a new twist to our annual fund effort—whether you choose a one-time gift or through monthly support. You can wait for the email heading your way or go to asmfoundation.org now. By investing in a teacher, you directly impact K-12 students, equipping them with the knowledge and hands-on experience to explore manufacturing, trade skills, and engineering pathways. These students are the future innovators who will bridge the gap between technical programs and advanced careers. As always, I remain grateful to the staff, donors, volunteers, and master teachers who make all of the materials science magic happen for our students and teachers. Thank you! In doing so, we have prepared an “Engaging Young Members Toolkit” designed for ASM chapters in every country to attract and retain young members. This toolkit has information for chapters on best practices regarding communication, events, ASM involvement opportunities, and awards and recognition. A key point about communication is the EPC’s suggestion to use LinkedIn as a tool for announcing chapter events, as many young members are familiar with this platform as a means for learning about professional events. However, whatever method your chapter chooses for communication, it is important to be consistent. The toolkit also discusses how to navigate engaging young members in a post-COVID world: Notably, hybrid is here to stay. Leaning into hybrid events will help drive participation from young members who are familiar with this event style. This approach is also ideal for chapters that cover a large geographic region, particularly ones with traffic congestion. The EPC has also prepared a list of ways to structure your chapter to elevate the voice of young members, as well as opportunities for awards and recognition to celebrate those who have been involved locally and nationally. If you are interested in more information about engaging young members in your local chapter, contact the EPC for a copy of the toolkit at emergingprof@asminternational.org.
