HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MARCH 2025 58 IN MEMORIAM Daniel Sandy Elliott, age 82, of York Haven, Pennsylvania, died on January 21. Elliott was born on July 25, 1942. He was a 1966 graduate of Drexel Institute and an active member of the Central Pennsylvania engineering community. In addition to leading his own company, Distributed System Equipment Inc., for over 40 years, he served a term as president of the Central Pennsylvania chapter of the Instrument Society of America. He also served as president of the ASM Southcentral Pennsylvania Chapter. Additionally, he promoted the teaching of engineering and science through serving as a judge and mentor at regional science fairs. For over 25 years, Elliott also provided guidance to engineering students at Messiah University assisting with the design and development of their projects. In recognition of these activities, in 2016 the Central Pennsylvania Professional Engineering Society awarded him the John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award. Gary Haupt of Cranston, Rhode Island, passed away on January 25. He was born and raised in Ames, Iowa, graduated from Ames High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy and a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering, both from Iowa State University. Haupt lived all over the United States during his career at Checon Corp. and CPS Technologies Corp. before retiring as a metallurgist from Lucas-Mihaupt Inc. He was member of the ASM Rhode Island Chapter. Haupt was also a volunteer with the ASM Materials Camp to encourage young people to enter STEM fields. His family suggests donations to the ASM Materials Education Foundation as a remembrance. Gordon W. Powell, FASM, 96, of Worthington, Ohio, passed away on December 22, 2024. He was born March 10, 1928, in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for eight years with the help of the GI Bill, ultimately achieving a Doctor of Science degree in metallurgy. Powell began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin and then taught at The Ohio State University in the department of metallurgical engineering. After his distinguished 29-year career at The Ohio State University, he retired as a professor emeritus in engineering. Powell continued to consult on failure analysis and prevention, and served as senior editor of the ASM Metals Handbook Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention in 1986, and A Fractography Atlas of Casting Alloys in 1992. Word has been received at ASM Headquarters of the death of Life Member Gregory L. Serangeli, age 87, of Peoria, Illinois. He passed away on January 10. Born on May 24, 1937, Serangeli served in the U.S. Air Force for six years in the 169th Tactical Fighter Squadron Intelligence Section. He later worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 43 years before retiring in 1997. A member of ASM International for 70 years, Serangeli was also a member of ASM’s Heat Treating Society and the Peoria Chapter. Powell Elliott IN MEMORIAM
