HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2024 37 IMAT 2024 was more than just a gathering of minds: It was a moment to reaffirm our commitment to pushing the boundaries of materials science. From discussions on sustainability to emerging technologies, the event underscored the central role ASM plays in fostering cutting-edge research, innovation, and collaboration across sectors. The enthusiasm and forward-looking energy from IMAT 2024 will serve as a foundation for many of the initiatives I plan to introduce during my presidency. Reflecting on the legacy of my predecessors, I was reminded of the dedication ASM leaders have shown over the years. Their leadership, especially during the pandemic, helped navigate through challenging times. During the IMAT conference, I had the honor of delivering two key speeches—at the annual meeting and at the awards dinner—both shaped by my experiences and the wisdom I have gained from colleagues and mentors within ASM. Addressing Strategic Priorities In my first speech, I outlined three strategic priorities for my presidency: (1) Fostering Strategic Collaborations, (2) Driving Member Engagement, and (3) Strengthening Core Foundations. These areas reflect the evolving needs of our society as we grow globally, build stronger partnerships, and secure a sustainable future. 1. Fostering Strategic Collaborations: With over 17,000 members worldwide—22% of whom are outside of North America—ASM has an incredible opportunity to bring together the brightest minds from across the globe. Expanding collaborations with industry, universities, and national laboratories is key to driving innovation and opening new opportunities for materials science advancement. ASM’s current partnerships will be strengthened to ensure broader engagement with critical sectors. Additionally, cross-disciplinary collaborations will be explored to address broader societal challenges, such as climate change, resource scarcity, and technological transformation. By positioning ASM as a key player in these discussions, we will open doors for innovation that transcend traditional materials science boundaries. 2. Driving Member Engagement: Our members are the lifeblood of ASM, and fostering meaningful connections is essential for their professional growth. A core focus will be on supporting young professionals and student chapters, while also enhancing member programs such as the Fellows Program. A comprehensive capital campaign will be developed to ideally fund scholarships, grants, and expanded outreach initiatives. This campaign will not only support the current generation but also pave the way for future leaders FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK ASM International: A Vision for the Future – Next Era of Possibilities As I begin my term as President of ASM International, I am humbled, honored, and excited to build on the remarkable achievements of our 111-year-old society, the world’s largest and foremost professional technical society serving the information needs of scientists, engineers, and technicians who develop, test, select, and apply advanced materials, including metals, composites, polymers, and ceramics. Leading ASM into what I call the “Next Era of Possibilities” is a responsibility I take with great care and dedication. My journey to this point has been shaped by the support of many within ASM, and my commitment is to elevate the society to new heights, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of materials science, engineering, and technology. The global landscape in materials science and engineering is evolving rapidly. We are witnessing transformative developments in areas such as additive manufacturing, nanomaterials, advanced composites, electronic materials, medical materials, artificial intelligence, and energy storage technologies. It is critical for ASM International to remain a leader in these advancements, not just by observing trends but by actively shaping them. This is our moment to strengthen our influence and ensure that ASM is not only relevant but also pivotal in driving the next wave of innovation. Taking the Helm at IMAT 2024 My presidency began during a pivotal moment for ASM: the 2024 IMAT event in Cleveland, which brought together over 800 global experts in materials science, engineering, and technology. The conference featured more than 200 technical sessions, over 60 industry booths, and welcomed participants from at least 30 countries, showcasing ASM’s global reach. This provided an excellent platform to celebrate ASM’s rich history and share our vision for the future. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Manjooran ASM Board 2024.
