Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award The ASM Materials Education Foundation and the Teacher Award Committee proudly announce the selection of Robert Lorenz Dusch of Princeton High School in Ohio as recipient of the 2024 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award. Established in 2007, the award recognizes the accomplishments of one high school science teacher who has demonstrated a significant and sustained impact on pre-college age students. The award includes $2000 plus $500 travel costs to IMAT through the generous donation of Dr. Kishor M. Kulkarni. Dusch, who teaches materials science as well as chemistry, has been a pillar in the success of the ASM Materials Camp at his school. Dusch is a tireless administrator and contributor to his blog, which is a valuable tool for master teachers, camp attendees, classroom teachers, and home school parents. Utilized by thousands, it is the go-to place to find a good explanation of whatever the materials science topic is at the moment. The award was presented on Monday, September 30, at the ASM Leadership Awards Luncheon at IMAT 2024 in Cleveland. 2024 Undergraduate Design Competition Winners The ASM Materials Education Foundation and Design Competition Committee are pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Undergraduate Design Competition. First prize goes to Michigan Technological University for “Reducing the Manganese Content in Solid Steel Welding Wire.” Team members include Anna Cole, Seth Eacker, Jack Schaller, and Bea Visscher, as well as advisor Paul Sanders. Satya Kondapalli of Hobart Brothers LLC was the industry sponsor. The team will receive $2000, along with $500 travel assistance and $500 to the department to support future design teams. Second prize goes to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for “Compact Morphology in Precipitates for Printable Cobalt Based Superalloys.” Team members include Charles Yong and Michelle Zong as well as advisors Kirsta Biggs, Julio Cesar Pereira dos Santos, and Gregory Olson. The team will receive $1500, along with $500 travel assistance. Third prize goes to Vanderbilt University for “SunPod.” Team members include Brina Ratangee, Liyu (Leo) Huang, Emily Qian, Lening (Nick) Cui, and faculty advisor Andrea Lock The team will receive $1000, along with $500 travel assistance. In addition, a Special Award for Most Creative Project Award went to Vanderbilt University. HTS Award Deadlines ASM HTS/Bodycote Best Paper in Heat Treating Contest The ASM Heat Treating Society (HTS) established the Best Paper in Heat Treating Award in 1997 to recognize a paper that represents advancement in heat treating technology, promotes heat treating in a substantial way, or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating.
