HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2024 54 FROM THE FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CORNER Ensuring ASM’s Relevance I am pleased to rejoin ASM International in the position of executive director. While some of you may know me from my past service with ASM as a financial executive, I look forward to meeting and hearing from more members and volunteers as I settle into my new role. After working with the ASM Board, and the Finance and Investment committees for 14 years, as well as many past executive directors, I have a deep understanding of ASM and am ready to serve in this critical position. I am passionate about ASM and extremely committed to the Society’s success and continuing strength and relevance throughout its second 100 years. I have built lasting relationships with many key volunteers and past presidents, which will enable me to hit the ground running and begin to address needs immediately. The “best of the best” communicate with authenticity and transparency, surround themselves with effective and skilled people, have strong ethics, look out for the best of their organization, and lead by example. I intend to bring these qualities to the forefront as executive director of ASM. In the next 15 months, through the end of 2025, we are going to focus on our core strengths: delivering education, events, journals, and technical information to our members and customers. There will be a renewed emphasis on serving members in the ways you value most. It is an honor to serve the Society again. The best way to engage members is to listen to what you are sharing with us. We will always welcome your input, calls, and emails. Your thoughts, concerns, and ideas are important to our team and to the success of the Society. We are stronger and smarter together. I look forward to hearing from you, and to working with the ASM Board, to strengthen our organization and ensure our relevance in the coming years. Brian Ives Lectureship Dr. Leili Tafaghodi Associate Professor McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario FROM THE FOUNDATION Sowing the Seeds of MSE I am now back at the ASM Foundation full-time and able to pursue some exciting opportunities that I will share soon. I would like to recap our most recent joint event with ASM International at IMAT, where we highlighted the Foundation’s work of sowing seeds of materials science and engineering (MSE) for students to help them become ASM International members. This was all while enjoying the iconic ASM International headquarters, the Dome, as the backdrop. The ASM Foundation helps students to learn about opportunities in the MSE field. Through its own programming and work as a separate entity, the Foundation aims to bring students into the field so they learn about how the field and ASM International can impact their careers for years to come. To increase the ASM Foundation’s ability to provide programming at no cost to participants, the Foundation launched its public Making a Material Difference campaign last year and is at 87% of the goal, as of this writing. At the Dome event, we honored the individuals and Becker Wilhelm Tafaghodi Wilson
