HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2024 53 LEADERSHIP COLUMNS FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK A Joint Message from ASM President Pradeep Goyal and Incoming President Navin Manjooran As we approach a new chapter in ASM International’s history, it is important to reflect on the significant achievements made this past year while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we’re proud to share this message with the ASM community as we transition leadership and continue building on the foundation of our shared success. ASM President Pradeep Goyal, FASM: Reflecting on ASM’s Accomplishments During my presidency, one of the standout achievements was successfully completing the search for a new Executive Director, in record time— less than three months. In July, we appointed Veronica Becker, who was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees. Veronica’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding ASM into its next phase of evolution. Kudos to the selection committee comprised of Senior Vice President Dr. Navin Manjooran (chair), Vice President Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman (co-chair), ASM Board members Dr. André McDonald and Dr. Dehua Yang, as well as ASM Past President Prof. Christopher Berndt. With support from the executive search firm, Dise & Company, which reviewed 370 candidate applications, they spent an extensive amount of time providing advice on the process and reviewing the shortlisted candidate applications. We also implemented monthly financial status reviews with the Board and initiated streamlining of our annual budgeting process to better align with ASM’s strategic objectives. The increased frequency of Executive Officer meetings allowed for more comprehensive discussions, leading to more informed decision-making at the Board level. On the operational side, we took a deep dive into our previous five-year IT infrastructure spending, which was not commensurate with the size of the organization. Event participation is also reaching pre-pandemic levels, with the International Thermal Spray Conference setting a new attendance record of over 1000 registrants. The 2024 ASM Strategic Planning session was held on July 23 and 24 in Cleveland, led by incoming ASM President Dr. Navin Manjooran. It was professionally facilitated and included ASM staff leadership as well as student board members. The addition of ASM staff provided important ideas, insights, and perspectives that were extremely valuable to the discussions. These accomplishments give me great confidence in ASM’s future, as I prepare to hand over the presidency to Navin. I wish him and the incoming Executive Officer’s team all the best. Incoming ASM President Dr. Navin Manjooran, FASM, FACerS, FIIM, FIMMM: Looking Ahead to ASM’s Future As I take over as President of ASM International during the IMAT conference in Cleveland this month, I am mindful of the challenges ahead, particularly in strengthening ASM as an organization. While ASM has made great strides under Pradeep’s leader- ship, we must focus on fortifying the organization to ensure long-term sustainability and growth. In addition to strengthening the organization, I aim to expand ASM’s global collaborations, leveraging the expertise of our international members to enhance our global presence. My vision is to foster an environment of inclusive excellence, where we draw on the strengths of our diverse membership to generate innovative ideas and solutions. I look forward to working with all of you—members, volunteers, and staff— during this pivotal time. Together, we can build on the progress made and navigate the challenges ahead. I am excited to collaborate with the ASM community to ensure our organization remains the global leader in materials science, engineering, and technology. As we transition leadership, we are united in our commitment to ensuring ASM’s continued success. By combining the accomplishments of the past year with a forward-looking approach, we believe ASM will emerge stronger, more resilient, and better positioned to serve its members for years to come. Let’s continue to build on our shared vision and work together to achieve even greater heights for ASM. Together: Moving ASM Forward!
