HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | OCTOBER 2024 51 Kara Beinert University of Alberta Kara Beinert is a senior finishing her bachelor’s degree in materials engineering, co-op program, at the University of Alberta (U of A). In 2022, Beinert received an NSERC Under- graduate Student Research Award toward an internship in fiber composite and additive manufacturing research at the U of A. In 2023, she worked to develop high-performance anode materials at Nanode Battery Technologies. She also served as vice president of external communication for the U of A Materials Engineering Student Society. This year, she will complete her final co-op term, conducting material failure analysis at ATCO, a natural gas utility company, and is excited to be co-leading the U of A Materials Engineering Bladesmithing team. Charles Santore Rutgers University Charles Santore is an incoming junior majoring in materials science and engineering (MSE) at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. As a freshman, he began researching boron carbide composites for military armor applications, later focusing on diboride composites for hypersonic flight applications. Santore’s ongoing senior lab project involves the arc melting and sintering of ZrB2-HfB2 composites. This summer, he is interning in a metallography lab through Universal Technical Resource Services. Outside of the classroom, he serves as the vice president of Rutgers’ Material Advantage Chapter. After graduation, Santore would like to earn a master’s degree in MSE and pursue a career in the aerospace or energy industry. David J. Chellman Scholarship The David J. Chellman Scholarship was established in 2014 by Mrs. Arline Denny in honor of her husband, a long-standing Senior Technical Fellow with Lockheed Martin Corp. and ASM Life Member who enthusiastically served on the AeroMat Conference Organizing Committee for more than 25 years. The scholarship is an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community, and is awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Tuition of $2500 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. Annalee Johnson University of Utah Annalee Johnson is an incoming sophomore at the University of Utah majoring in metallurgical engineering and considering an emphasis in nuclear energy. During her first year in college, Johnson worked on the F-35 Travel Pod as a composite technician. Her employment in the aerospace industry gave her valuable experience, which has been further enhanced by the lab position she was able to secure through the ACCESS Scholars program. Johnson continues to support that program, volunteering to mentor future ACCESS Scholars participants. She recently joined Dr. Michael F. Simpson’s Nuclear Pyrometallurgy Laboratory and has been offered an undergraduate researcher position. Outstanding Scholar Awards The Outstanding Scholar Awards were established to recognize students who have demonstrated exemplary academic and personal achievements, as well as interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Three awards of $2000 each are funded by the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Ivan Cermak University of Wisconsin-Madison Ivan Cermak is a senior studying materials science and engineering (MSE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). He first became interested in metallurgy through his blacksmithing hobby. He is currently president of the AFS portion of the Material Advantage/ American Foundry Society student chapter at UW-Madison and has participated in events, such as the SFSA Cast in Steel competition and the FEF College Industry Conference. He also gives demonstrations at UW-Madison’s Engineering Expo to introduce MSE to younger kids. Cermak is a member of Tau Beta Pi, and he conducted a metallurgy internship at Waupaca Foundry this past summer. After graduation, he is considering attending graduate school to pursue a career in metallurgy. Sarah Cushnie McMaster University Sarah Cushnie is entering her fifth year of the integrated biomedical engineering and health sciences program at McMaster University, where she is specializing in materials and biomedical engineering with a minor in SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
